“Let’s show the people coast to coast that we here in New Orleans can party! Are you ready to roll ’78 and light up 79?!”These were the words from the buzzing (and probably buzzed) emcee as he introduced the Marshall Tucker band in 1978 at The Warehouse – New Orleans' legendary music hall. The New Year's Eve audience was reported ti be the largest radio audience to hear a broadcast at the time, and the band elevated themselves to the occasion. This rousing legacy recording is sourced from the original 24-track tapes and was mixed in Macon, Georgia in 2019 by Paul Hornsby, the original Capricorn Records producer who recorded and produced their first six gold and platinum albums.

Mickey Jupp – known to his fans as ‘Juppy’ – was the singer, pianist and guitar player with the Sixties’ British rock band Legend. Based in Southend On Sea, Juppy had previously performed with the Orioles and was steeped in rock’n’roll tradition. When Legend broke up in 1972 the singer re-launched his career on the London circuit, where he attained semi-mythical status as a pioneer of UK pub rock. He was signed to the eclectic Stiff label, and ‘Juppanese’ was released in 1978 to great acclaim among aficionados. Here are a dozen rockin’ tracks, including the appropriately titled ‘Old Rock’n’Roller’, together with five bonus items, comprising A and B-sides and album tracks, all composed by the ‘Juppanese’ man himself.

The unrivaled Soul Queen of New Orleans – a title officially bestowed by local officials, no less – Irma Thomas ranks among Crescent City R&B's greatest and most enduring musical ambassadors, never enjoying the coast-to-coast commercial success of contemporaries like Aretha Franklin and Etta James but nevertheless breathing the same rarified air in the minds of many soul music aficionados.

Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Saxophone

Albert Ayler (1936-1970) was a jazz genius, whose story has the status of tragic myth – myth which, as often happens,is informed by truth. He pioneered free jazz on tenor saxophone, creating generations of disciples, beginning with John Coltrane. In his ecstatic soundworld, he forged connections between the furthest reaches of 60s avantgardism, and themusic's beginnings in New Orleans, re-igniting its creative impulses. But free jazz was never a commercially viableform: when Ayler died he had won some critical recognition, but none from the jazz public. 1964 was Ayler's annusmirabilis.
