Eunice Kathleen Waymon's beautiful, mellifluous voice is one of the most distinctive and celebrated in music. As Nina Simone she recorded over forty albums during a long and distinguished career that stretched over five decades. Nina recorded for Philips from 1964-1966. This "best of" contains 10 songs that made up the original U.S. LP release of this collection, plus the additional tracks "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and "The Other Woman", both songs which are closely associated with Nina.

“Eyes Wide Open” is her first album for “Losen Records”, and Nina Pedersen is confirming her increasing interest for composition and songwriting. “Eyes Wide Open” is a modern, laidback and relaxed album. Some electronic elements are introduced by the new entry, the drummer “Giampaolo Scatozza” which entered the group last year. The pianist Pierpaolo Principato introduces keyboards on several tracks and Marco Loddo is solidly supporting with bass loops. Paolo Innarella is delivering wonderful saxophone solos on Mrs. Nilsen and the ballad “Mother & Son” and Aldo Bassi is featuring with his trumpet on “Granny’s Waltz” and “Ribbon of Sand”, the only track not signed Nina Pedersen.

Singing alternately in German and English, Hagen is backed by rock tracks leaning toward punk on some songs, and by producer Giorgio Moroder's signature Euro-disco synth-dance sounds on others on this 14-track, 74-minute compilation. Want to hear a German-language version of the Tubes' "White Punks on Dope"? How about a performance of "My Way" (also in German) that rivals Sid Vicious' for outrageousness? Ultimately, Nina Hagen may be a period novelty act of the early '80s, a mixture of Toni Basil, Falco, and a hyena. But she gets your attention.

Verve's "Finest Hour" collection of Nina Simone's work compiles 60 minutes of career highlights, including 'Wild Is the Wind', 'I Put a Spell on You', 'Four Women', 'I Loves You, Porgy', and 'My Baby Just Cares for Me'. Though it's by no means a definitive compilation of Simone's music, it does provide a welcome overview of her Verve years.
