This new album conducted by Nicholas Collon continues Ondine’s award-winning series of orchestral works by Witold Lutosławski (1913–1994) together with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The series has gathered several accolades, including a Grammy nomination, a BBC Music Magazine Awards nomination, as well as several recording of the month awards and best recordings of the year nominations. This album includes the composer’s early hit, his folklorish masterpiece Concerto for Orchestra, which is among his most performed compositions. The album also includes Partita for Violin and Orchestra (with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist), a virtuosic 5-movement work which in its orchestral version is not short of a Violin Concerto. The rarity in the album is Lutoslawski’s Novelette from 1979, which, although fragmentary, is already pointing toward the ideas of his 3rd Symphony.

'Tanyel's clear enthusiasm for this unhackneyed programme is utterly refreshing … The performance reminds us again just how well she understands the piano's Romantic repertoire' (Classic CD). 'the music here could hardly be more sympathetically presented than by Tanyel, whose performances are immaculate in their musicianship and virtuosity' (Gramophone). Seta Tanyel, the Armenian pianist, demonstrates a flair for the virtuosic style of German-Polish Scharwenka. She projects a well-rounded tone, a flexible sense of rhythm, a seamless technique, a fertile imagination and a daring panache. She seems to genuinly love these beautiful, light-hearted compositions. Scharwenka's music (who lived in the States for seven years) possesses energy, harmonic interest, strong rhythm, many beautiful melodies and much Polish national character. A highly enjoyable recording.

oday, Glazunov (1865–1936) is often dismissed as a conservative who offered little beyond a timid orthodoxy. True, his style remained largely unaltered as Russia turbulently evolved from feudal monarchy to Communist state, yet it is easy: to underestimate the sheer style and character of, for example, the lush melody at the heart of the Second Etude, Op. 31 or the central whirlwind that erupts fat the centre of the B flat minor Sonata's Scherzo.

Pianophiles will warmly embrace and find much to enjoy in this 10 CD set of the complete studio recordings of the Australian pianist Eileen Joyce (1908-1991). It's the first time such a comprehensive collection has been compiled. Her recorded legacy has been unjustly neglected over the years, save for single CDs from labels such as Dutton, Testament and Pearl. Only APR have seriously championed her cause with a 5-CD set: ‘The Complete Parlophone and Columbia Solo Recordings 1933-1945’, issued in 2011 (review). Needless to say, all of those recordings are to be found in this new Eloquence edition.

This third recording by Imogen Cooper on Chandos features some of Robert Schumann’s most characteristic and complex works for solo piano. Cooper is one of those artists who are reaching a glorious maturity in middle age; she seems to follow in the steps of her teacher Alfred Brendel, her prodigious virtuosity coexisting with lyrical and emotional wisdom. This album includes the Davidsbündlertänze which she describes as a ‘work of stirring beauty and humour that make it one of the great romantic masterpieces for the piano’. It also illustrates the journey between two sets of variations: Schumann’s first published and last composed piano pieces. While the ‘Abegg’ is ‘virtuosic, extroverted, challenging to play, and charming’, the Geistervariationen are ‘introverted and sparse, with a deep but elusive emotion’. Finally, in the two Novelletten Imogen Cooper reveals what she calls the ‘hidden narrative filaments to be discovered’ in Schumann’s music; this requires ‘a skill which is very necessary in the interpretation of scores that frequently appear disjointed and illogical’.

Zez Confrey's compositions for piano deserve a better shake than they've been getting over the past 80 years or so. While historical recordings made by Confrey himself are delightful and exciting to those who enjoy such innocent fun, these 1995 realizations by Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze expand the lens a bit and allow for a glimpse at the composer's full range of musical ideas. The primary stratum consists of Confrey's most famous novelties: 1921's "Kitten on the Keys," "Coaxing the Piano," and "Stumbling" from 1922, and the showoff's "Dizzy Fingers" of 1923. These pleasant little ragtime-flavored pieces of pop piano illustrate both why the average American enjoyed such stuff and why Harlem stride piano ace Willie "The Lion" Smith spoke so disparagingly of what he regarded as know-nothing ragtimers, meaning those who helped to popularize and perpetuate the often improvisationally limited Tin Pan Alley approach to piano playing.

Gabriel Tacchino, a humble figure of the piano was one of the greatest instrumentalists of his generation: awarded in various international prizes, noticed by Karajan who contributed to his recognition, close friend and disciple of Poulenc, the music of whom he recorded intensely… This homage album (50 tracks, four and a half hours of music) includes his most notable recordings, from Beethoven and Rachmaninov concertos conducted by André Cluytens, four-hands pieces with Jacques Février or Aldo Ciccolini, lieder with Mady Mesplé… This collection of course includes solo works by his mentor Francis Poulenc, and a very rare excerpt of his Mozart sonatas recording, making its digital debut!
