The last time cellist Yo-Yo Ma teamed with bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin player Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers fame) for a classical/bluegrass hybrid, the result was the gold-selling Songs of Joy & Peace. Here, Ma, Meyer, and Thile are joined by fiddler Stuart Duncan in a different kind of string quartet.

The three Copland classics on this disc–Billy the Kid, Appalachian Spring and Rodeo–are all ballet scores, and from the very first bars of Billy, with its evocative depiction of the wide-open prairies, you are firmly in the territory of music that tells a story. But you don't need to follow all the ins and outs of each story to enjoy music which paints as vivid a picture of rural America as you could hope for. If the sprightly "Hoe Down" from Rodeo brings a splash of colour to concert programmes, the remarkable thing about so much of the music in these three pieces is how quietly sensitive it is. And while Michael Tilson Thomas does not hold back in wringing every last ounce of splashy razzmatazz, he is equally the master of introspective music which clearly demonstrates that you don't need to be loud to be a populist. The recordings were made in the San Francisco Symphony's home, Davies Symphony Hall. You couldn't hope for more authentic performances than this–more than 76 minutes of dyed-in-the-wool Americana.

"The Goat Rodeo Sessions" is a groundbreaking project that brings together four string virtuosos: acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin-player Chris Thile. Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile have collaborated in the past, producing the gold-selling album Songs of Joy and Peace. Each artist is a prominent figure in his own musical realm. They have come together as a unified quartet for this classical-bluegrass masterpiece. The music, which includes two tracks with vocalist Aoife O’Donovan, feels both new and familiar it’s composed and improvised, uptown and down home, funky and pastoral and above all, uniquely American. The album topped the Billboard Bluegrass charts and won two GRAMMY Awards.

Emmylou Harris once called her 1985 release The Ballad Of Sally Rose, one of the singer’s most personal albums, a country opera. The song cycle is based loosely on her short time with influential singer-songwriter Gram Parsons, who died in 1973. Known more for singing songs written by others, this was Harris’ first self-composed album and it remains one of her favourites.

All four titles – ‘Rehearsal’ (1970), ‘I Think I’ll Write A Song’ (1971), ‘Songfall’ (1972) and ‘Phillip Goodhand-Tait’ (1973) – finally make their debut on CD in the UK.
Compiled and overseen with Phillip’s full involvement and blessing, ‘Gone Are The Songs Of Yesterday’ pays testament to his skills as both performer and composer. Each album features bonus tracks originally tucked away on 7” singles, as well as the added delight of three recordings from the previously unissued soundtrack for the 1971 film Universal Soldier.

This DVD features a tribute concert for the legendary Buddy Holly. Recorded in Austin in 1987, it features Brian Setzer, John Fogerty, Carl Perkins, The Crickets and others.
Buddy Holly is perhaps the most anomalous legend of '50s rock & roll he had his share of hits, and he achieved major rock & roll stardom, but his importance transcends any sales figures or even the particulars of any one song (or group of songs) that he wrote or recorded. Holly was unique, his legendary status and his impact on popular music all the more extraordinary for having been achieved in barely 18 months.
