Finally, after almost half a decade of serious dues-paying, Earth, Wind & Fire took off commercially with its fifth album, Open Our Eyes. EWF had been delivering great albums since 1971, but it wasn't until 1974 that the public proved genuinely receptive to Maurice White's mystical and unorthodox take on soul and funk. No longer would EWF enjoy only a small cult following. Thanks to treasures like "Kalimba Song," the gritty funk smoker "Mighty Mighty," and the unforgettable "Devotion," Open Our Eyes became EWF's first gold album and went to the top of the R&B charts. It's also interesting to note that with this album, singer Jessica Cleaves was gone, resulting in the first time EWF had an all-male lineup.

This CD is simply full of music from beginning to end that is funky, soulful, and fun. The title track "Open Our Eyes" is a wonderful gospel song, and the minor hit "Feeling Blue" is a great ballad. Highlights for 2001 release are the added tracks including the funky "Fair But So Uncool" and the gospel inspired soul in "Ain't No Harm to Moan". You will love the improvised jamming in "Drum Song" and the African inspired "Kalimba Story".

This is a wonderful collection of music and you can tell they had a lot of fun recording it. The music sounds fresh and alive, which is remarkable considering it has been more 30 years since it was recorded. A great and underrated release from one of the most talented recording groups of all time.

Nigel Hall and DJ Harrison are multi-instrumentalists known most for their respective main roles as keyboardists in Lettuce and Butcher Brown. Harrison's band backed Hall on Spiritual, a 2021 album that contained a very faithful version of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Caribou," and Hall later assisted Harrison with an update of Roy Ayers' "Coffy." Released only a few months after Harrison's all-covers Shades of Yesterday, The Burning Bush: A Journey Through the Music of Earth, Wind & Fire further explores foundational Black music with the intent of opening gateways for younger listeners. That the album was previewed first with the serene and spiritual "Earth, Wind & Fire" made it clear that the duo's project would be going far beneath the surface. While they don't reference the lesser-known first three EWF albums, Hall and Harrison – joined by members of Lettuce and Butcher Brown, along with bassist Brandon Lane and singer Sam Reed – mix it up with album cuts outnumbering radio staples.
