2018 debut album, by prodigious keys player, composer and producer Joe Armon-Jones, is buoyant, celebratory and welcoming. With a background in jazz, he draws from influences in dub, hip-hop and soul. Different traditions are infused and commingled together. Soulful brass arrangements are colored with carefully-tuned atmospherics; individual flashes of brilliance are bound into the album's bigger picture. He's part of London's young, jazz-influenced music scene. Drawn from that same close-knit circle, the album features the likes of Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Oscar Jerome. It's playing with those - along with Ezra Collective, which he co-founded, and touring with the likes of Ata Kak and Pharoahe Monch - which has honed his playing and grown his ideas. It's made for a record with an unmistakable depth. He draws on deep musical understanding, making music which is warm and has a feeling of joy. A document of his vision for bringing together his different influences, it's also a testament to hard-earned, head-turning musical virtuosity.

Ace has long been associated with the Stax catalogue and we are continually looking for new ways to keep the connection going via packages of exciting vault discoveries. Many of our recent Stax compilations have concentrated on the company’s later era – the yellow period, as it’s known in collector circles – but we’re starting our 2016 schedule with a project that draws on releases from their earlier blue period.

For a mild-mannered man whose music was always easy on the ear, Nat King Cole managed to be a figure of considerable controversy during his 30 years as a professional musician. From the late '40s to the mid-'60s, he was a massively successful pop singer who ranked with such contemporaries as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. He shared with those peers a career that encompassed hit records, international touring, radio and television shows, and appearances in films. But unlike them, he had not emerged from a background as a band singer in the swing era. Instead, he had spent a decade as a celebrated jazz pianist, leading his own small group. Oddly, that was one source of controversy. For some reason, there seem to be more jazz critics than fans of traditional pop among music journalists, and Cole's transition from jazz to pop during a period when jazz itself was becoming less popular was seen by them as a betrayal.

The last twelve months has seen Gaby Moreno win a Grammy for her 2023 EP ‘X Mi Vol 1’ and a Latin Grammy as producer of ‘Vida’ by Omara Portuondo. Her song ‘Por Qué Te Vas?’ was a highlight of the soundtrack for last year’s ‘Puss In Boots- The Last Wish’ movie. AUK readers in the UK may have seen her supporting Nickel Creek in the Autumn of 2023 while any attending San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few weeks later will have seen her move a Sunday lunchtime audience at the main Banjo Stage from ‘who’s this?’ to a roaring standing ovation inside 40 minutes.

Aside from a three-song session for V-Disc during the late 1940s, this CD contains Clark Terry's first recordings as a leader. Already an alumni of both Charlie Barnet's and Count Basie's bands, and a then-current member of Duke Ellington's orchestra, Terry is more focused on bop in these dates, with a terrific band including trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, pianist Horace Silver, cellist/bassist Oscar Pettiford, bassist Wendell Marshall, and drummer Art Blakey, with charts by Quincy Jones. ~ AllMusic

Belgium's Pierre Vervloesem is probably best known as an inventive electric guitarist, but he sometimes straps on a bass to propel the low notes, and that's the case with his Simple quartet, whose avant jazz-rock debut, Undeletable, was released in 2014 as the eighth outing in the Off label's P.V. Presents series.

Bill Champlin served as lead singer, primary songwriter, keyboard player, rhythm guitarist, and occasional saxophonist in the Bay Area band the Sons of Champlin from 1965 to 1977, shepherding the middle-level San Francisco rock group through seven modestly selling albums. In August 1977, he quit the band that bore his name and moved to Los Angeles, where he became a busy session singer. Not surprisingly, that soon led to his own solo recording contract and his debut album, Single. To anyone expecting acid rock from a veteran hippie musician, however, Champlin announces his change of direction on the album cover, an elaborately staged photograph of him admiring himself in a three-sided mirror, dressed in a tuxedo, his hair and beard fashionably trimmed, as a cadre of tailors tries to tempt him with more colorful fabrics and outfits.

Zez Confrey's compositions for piano deserve a better shake than they've been getting over the past 80 years or so. While historical recordings made by Confrey himself are delightful and exciting to those who enjoy such innocent fun, these 1995 realizations by Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze expand the lens a bit and allow for a glimpse at the composer's full range of musical ideas. The primary stratum consists of Confrey's most famous novelties: 1921's "Kitten on the Keys," "Coaxing the Piano," and "Stumbling" from 1922, and the showoff's "Dizzy Fingers" of 1923. These pleasant little ragtime-flavored pieces of pop piano illustrate both why the average American enjoyed such stuff and why Harlem stride piano ace Willie "The Lion" Smith spoke so disparagingly of what he regarded as know-nothing ragtimers, meaning those who helped to popularize and perpetuate the often improvisationally limited Tin Pan Alley approach to piano playing.
