Montreal-based composer and trumpet player Simon Millerd presents his first release under his own name, "Lessons and Fairytales". This deeply personal record features guest artists that are longtime friends and collaborators of Millerd, including vocalist Emma Frank, with her Luciana Souza-inspired tone and improvisation and Nomad co-founder Jacob Wiens on guitar.

Recording the “Seis libros del Delphín” has been a long-held wish of the Argentine guitarist Pablo Márquez, who came to Europe almost twenty years ago to study renaissance repertoire and to delve into contemporary treatises on performance practice. “Troughout my artistic development, Luys de Narváez has remained a passion of mine, never failing to move me with the mystical nature of his music and the crystal clarity of his discourse”, he writes in his performer’s note to the present album which marks his debut on ECM New Series.

Although he is best known as the composer of some of the greatest masterpieces of Spanish piano music, Enrique Granados also wrote a much less well-known sequence of orchestral music. The cinematic Marcha de los vencidos evokes the painful trudging of 'the defeated' in an unspecified battle, while the incidental music for the play Torrijos demonstrates Granados's talent for lyrical writing and his love of the stage. The ambitious Suite sobre cantos gallegos uses Galician folk melodies and dance rhythms to reflect the landscapes of the region. This is the first recording in a series marking the centenary of Granados's death.

Young Montreal trumpeter-composer Simon Millerd has been performing with Germany's acclaimed Pablo Held Trio and this is the first documentation of their evocative music-making. Also featured on some tracks are the mostly wordless vocals of Montreal folk-jazz singer Emma Frank (her new album features Jim Black and Aaron Parks), as well as some of Millerd's bandmates from Nomad. Millerd's trumpet style is smoky and delicate, somewhat reminiscent of Arve Henriksen.

Cannonball Adderley's 1960 Quintet (with cornetist Nat Adderley and pianist Victor Feldman) was in top form during their tour of Europe. Norman Granz did not release the music heard on this CD until almost 25 years after the fact but the strong solos and enthusiastic ensembles had not dated nor faded with time. These versions of "The Chant," "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "Big 'P'" make for interesting comparisons with the better-known renditions. Adderley fans will want this set.

Thirty year old guitarist Max Frankl recently won best national guitarist in Germany's 2012 Echo Jazz Awards. A former student of Kurt Rosenwinkel and Wolfgang Muthspiel, it's a measure of his progress that he was asked by the latter to this record this, his debut CD, for Material Records. Featuring ten original compositions, Home, is an avowal to that which is musically important to Frankl and mixes lyricism with empathetic musical interplay. Five of Europe's most distinguished jazz musicians join the guitarist on the album including Nils Wogram, one of the most active and versatile trombonists performing today.
