R.I.P. James Edward Ingram
(1952-02-16 – 2019-01-29)

James Ingram racked up a number of adult contemporary-styled R&B pop hits in the 1980s, many of them duets, and the bulk of those hits are collected on this 12-track 1991 compilation. His music may at times seem somewhat melodramatic, registering on the pop spectrum somewhere between Michael Bolton and Billy Ocean, but nonetheless exemplifies top-notch 1980s adult contemporary pop production at its zenith. This set includes his two hit duets with Patti Austin, those being "How Do You Keep the Music Playing" and their timeless chart-topper "Baby Come to Me." Also included is his monster duet with Linda Ronstadt, "Somewhere Out There," and his hit duet with Michael McDonald, the funky "Yah Mo B There" (definitely one of Ingram's coolest songs). A few rarities make an appearance, including "Where Did My Heart Go?" from the film City Slickers, and the BET theme "Remember the Dream."

Nils Lofgren is a rock musician, recording artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Along with his work as a solo artist, he has been a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1984, a former member of Crazy Horse and founder/ front-man of the band Grin. This album is certainly the most ambitious and daring of Nils career. I Came To Dance was Nils Lofgren's third solo album. It contains 'Code Of The Road', an epic which always goes down well live and the weird 'Jealous Gun', which appears to be an anti-hunting protest song. The Rolling Stones' 'Happy' ends the LP well with backing singers (Patti Austin, Luther Vandross) who give it a soul-rock feel.

Luther Vandross was one of the most successful R&B artists of the 1980s and '90s. Not only did he score a series of multi-million-selling albums containing chart-topping hit singles and perform sold-out tours of the U.S. and around the world, but he also took charge of his music creatively, writing or co-writing most of his songs and arranging and producing his records. He also performed these functions for other artists, providing them with hits as well.

"Closeup" is singer Frankie Valli again finding the magic without his Four Seasons, this time in the '70s with two big hits in two different genres. The album is very, very good, and in a roundabout way is a great example of why Clive Davis worked wonders with Bell Records when he turned it into Arista. Former Bell president Larry Uttal had it all in this project, and it should have been much, much bigger - it should have been the album to firmly establish Private Stock Records as a major player. But for all the incredible cast members and all the artistry here Jim Keltner on drums, Bobbye Hall on conga, Clydie King and Patti Austin on backing vocals (seven years before Austin's own number one hit).

In February of 2000, several world-renowned soul, r&b, and rock artists gathered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to pay tribute to the man who virtually defines this thing they call "blue-eyed soul". McDonald's star began to climb once he began lending his distinctive baritone vocals to some of Steely Dan's great albums, starting with 1974's Pretzel Logic. Who the hell can forget McDonald crooning "PEEEEG" on their brilliant Aja album? All hell broke loose when he joined the already successful Doobie Brothers in 1976 and stole some of the lead vocal chores away from Tom Johnston, starting with the Takin' It To The Streets album.

Richard Tee's "Inside You" was released in 1989 on columbia records and has been long out of print and very difficult to locate. If you are lucky enough to find a copy on E-Bay or through Amazon's used music network I would grab it. This cd is full of easy listening jazz/funk vocals and instrumentals that are done in typical Richard Tee keyboard cool jazz style. The cd gets ample support from an allstar studio team featuring: Tee on keyboards and vocals, Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl on drums, Marcus Miller on bass, Ralph MacDonald percussion, John Tropea on guitar, Lenny Pickett on sax and Patti Austin on backround vocals just to name a few. Highlights include "Louisiana Sunday Afternoon", "So Hard To Handle", "Will You Be There" and "Changes". It's a pleasure to listen to well played music by musicians who are not household names but are as talented as anyone in the industry.
