Released in 1976 as the follow up to the self-titled Arista debut album by super musicians (trumpeter) Randy and (saxophonist) Michael Brecker, Back To Back was issued under the moniker The Brecker Brothers Band as a result of the inclusion of other key players - Will Lee (bass, lead vocals); Chris Parker (drums); Don Grolnick (keyboards); David Sanborn (alto sax); and Steve Khan (guitars). Back To Back not only featured the super talents of the Breckers and the extended band but an all-star cast that included drummer Steve Gadd, percussionists Ralph MacDonald and Sammy Figueroa, vocalist Patti Austin and at the time, session and jingle singer Luther Vandross (who co-wrote two songs on the album).

She was a very rare and precious talent that won me over as a fan within a month of being able to acquire her self-titled from 1982 this year (2001). Her smooth vocal approach to some of the material along with the moments where she belts out with such strong and powerful and soulful finesse and conviction is a testament as to why she was a highly sought after background session vocalist working with the likes of Madonna, Patti Austin, Quincy Jones, etc.In fact, Guthrie's sweet, yet sassy, voice was very close to style much like Patti Austin's. She never sang over the top (like most R&B wannabe divas in a melo-dramatic sense) nor did she stay hidden behind a background vocal session (she was recognizable)! Much to the world's sadness she is gone but has left behind a treasure for those who still want to get to know her.She is gone, but not forgotten…

For his ninth contemporary jazz release, Bob James brings in the multitalented Rod Temperton, and an all-star vocal cast including Patti Austin, Lani Groves, Major Holley, Luther Vandross, and many others for what only can be described as pure musical magic. The macabre "Hypnotique" with its unintelligible vocals is the ultimate "daytime nightmare". The tempo picks up on the funky "The Steamin' Feeling". We are transported to magical lands with the dreamy "Enchanted Forest". Spyro Gyra frontman Jay Beckenstein shows his stuff on "Unicorn". Bob shows amazing dexterity on both the acoustic piano and Oberheim polyphonic synth. The title song features the vocal cast, as well as some interesting sound effects by Tabby Andriello.

Label: Atlantic (USA) | Cat.# 80333-2 | Released: 1991 (1975-03-01)

Capping off a string of early-'70s hits with this album's title track, Roberta Flack would soon take a sabbatical from the spotlight in 1975. And while she would return to the stage and studio, Flack never quite hit the heights of this and the handful of other MOR soul releases from the first half of the decade. Her Carole King-meets-Gladys Knight sound is particularly impressive on highlights like "Mr. Magic" and "Feelin' That Glow." Helping out with the stellar backing are such luminaries as vocalist Patti Austin, drummer Alphonze Mouzon, keyboardist Bob James, and guitarist Hugh McCracken. Maybe not as fine an album as 1971's "Quiet Fire", "Feel Like Makin' Love" will still please the singer's dedicated fans.
