Acclaimed British pianist Paul Lewis returns to the music of Franz Schubert with another two-disc collection of works for solo piano. His fifth release in the series, this set features the great A minor Piano Sonata D.845, the Impromptus D.935, the Moments Musicaux D.780, the Allegretto D915 and the always-popular Wanderer Fantasy D.760. This release features some of Schubert's most popular and highly regarded compositions for piano and will undoubtedly further enhance Lewis' growing reputation as a specialist in this repertoire and a true heir to the great Alfred Brendel.

“Giovanni Zamboni Romano, originally from Rome, was a fine expert in musical counterpoint and virtuoso on the theorbo, lute, harpsichord, chitarra sminuita, mandola and mandolin, and also a skilled professional sharpener of oriental stones for jewels.” Such is our lute player described by the chronicler Ranieri Busoni.The Sonatas for lute in tablature (Sonate d’intavolatura di leuto) of 1718 are the last Italian works for lute printed in tablature, likely prepared by Zamboni, who was deft at handling stones and jewellery.

Late sixteenth-century Florence was alive with theater. Seeking to achieve the perfect blend between music and poetry, intermedi (interludes) were inserted into plays. These interludes were presented with lavish visual and musical resources. After reaching an initial peak in 1589 with the intermedi composed for Bargagli's La pellegrina, the tradition survived the burgeoning genre of opera through the work of such composers as Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi and Gagliano. On this release, rather than aiming for the impossible ideal of a reconstruction, Raphaël Pichon has devised a sort of imaginary intermedi by selecting the finest gems from this repertory, featuring the figures of Apollo, Orpheus and Eurydice, and above all Cupid.

Stefan Vladar is a prominent Austrian pianist. Well before he reached the age of 30, he was the winner of a major competition, had appeared with many famous conductors and orchestras in Europe and America, and had made several important recordings. But like many successful pianists from the latter-twentieth century, he wanted to branch out into other areas: he first served as director of various musical events and then became a conductor. While his choices in repertory have favored the German School especially as a conductor he has played various piano works by Dvorák, Bartók, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Gershwin. As a pianist Vladar has regularly performed as a recitalist, soloist, and chamber player and has recorded for major labels, including Sony, Naxos, Harmonia Mundi, Camerata, and Koch Classics.
