Born in Sussex in 1877, Roger Quilter was a fellow-student of Percy Grainger, Cyril Scott, and H. He is best known for his contribution to English art song, having composed around 150 songs, many of which remain regular recital favourites. For this album, the tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook explore his output from early works such as ‘Now sleeps the crimson petal’ through to late examples such as ‘The Ash Grove’. All of the songs are settings of English texts, with the exception of the Four Songs of Mirza Schaffy, which set German texts by Friedrich von Bodenstedt. The musicians have arranged their selection of twenty-seven songs into thematic groups – Shakespeare songs, songs about flowers, folksongs, songs of love etc. – which makes for a fascinating and rewarding programme.

Daltrey, who has proven with the Who he can pack a wallop vocally, reveals a kinder, gentler side of himself on Can't Wait to See the Movie. Instead of sounding like a revered musician, he announces himself like a sniveling school boy who has just parted ways with his first love. With the exception of "Lover's Storm," all the tunes come across as if he is holding back his natural fervor while spilling out aimless schlock about love and relationships. Knowing the potential that is harnessed within Daltrey, his half-hearted attempts at unleashing the pains built up by failed romances doesn't add up to much.

Amazon Review by AlanMusicMan
Miller's unique voice seems to me a fascinating blend of cigarette soaked rasp and good-old-boy big-voice manly.
He wrote many of these songs, some of which other people took away and made their own. But what we have here is the best of his output - including those songs that were runaway successes commercially in Europe (King of the road, Little Green Apples etc). I have bought also-ran CDs of Miller's recordings before and some turned out to be the usual pale re-takes, whilst others were collections of his lesser stuff levened with a couple of the hits. This collection is not without clunkers, but for the most part it's his prime material. My favourites? The hits of course, and Engine #9 and the "'comedy' songs such as "My Uncle Use to Love me but She Died" are worth a single listen - though would get old fast! Also, I find myself drawn to his version of Me and Bobby McGee (though Gordon Lightfoot's is always the definitive version of that song for me). If you're only ever going to buy one Roger Miller collection - this one should do you nicely!

A sublime addition to Sean McCann’s Recital Program, This Floating World is Roger Eno’s first solo LP in a decade, following on from Anatomy [2008] and a split LP with Plumbline in 2013. Mostly solo piano expressions, but with a few intriguing embellishments of electronics in Garden, vocals on Empty Room, and sonorous chimes in Riddle, saving the detuned pearl of Out of Tune, Out of Time, Out of Here for dessert…
