I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.

The final album of an (unintentional) trilogy, Crusade is most notable for the appearance of a very young, pre- Rolling Stones Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centrepiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. The rest of the record, while very enjoyable, is standard blues rock fare of the day, but somewhat behind the then-progressive flavour of the period 1967. Mayall, while being one of the great bandleaders of London, simply wasn't really the frontman that the group needed so desperately, especially then. Nevertheless, Crusade is important listening for Mick Taylor aficionados. –Matthew Greenwald, All Music Guide

Vocal groups and styles came and went from the 1950s through the 1980s, but somehow the Drifters evolved and persevered, spanning doo-wop and disco before being relegated exclusively to the oldies touring circuit. Rockin' & Driftin' collects highlights from the group's embryonic Clyde McPhatter-led era (beginning with 1953's "Money Honey") into the mid-'70s, when the group still had some standing in the U.K. "On Broadway," "There Goes My Baby," "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk"–they're all included in this handsome, thoroughly annotated three-disc box set. All told, there are 79 selections here; the 16-song Very Best of the Drifters is a viable option for more casual fans interested in a selection of '59 to '64 smashes. More thorough-minded fans of vocal groups will find that Rockin' & Driftin' satisfies their hunger for Drifters nuggets great and small.

This 16-song set presents the hits Wonder scored after he negotiated artistic control for himself in the 1970s. It's a wondrous collection, ranging from the driving pop-funk of "Superstition" and the streetwise "Living for the City" to the sweet "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," now a pop standard. In addition to the hits, Musiquarium includes four great new songs, two of which ("Do I Do" and "That Girl") would go on to become hits soon enough. In the years since this set was originally released, Wonder's output has been spotty at best, but Musiquarium reminds us that Stevie Wonder is a giant of soul and pop. –David Cantwell

Donald Berman is a superlative pianist, but as any number of attempts by excellent players have shown, it takes more than technique to bring Ives alive. To my ears Berman's Ives most resembles the playing of Ives himself, as we hear it in the composer's private recordings. With Berman there is the same subtlety of voicing you hear in Ives's playing, the same power combined with delicacy—a surprising thing to say about Ives, but that's how he often played his own music. Berman studied with John Kirkpatrick, the composer's first great interpreter, and kept growing from those studies. Ives was a prophetic genius whose consciousness, and piano writing, stayed rooted in Romanticism. For a pianist that's a very difficult balancing act, but Berman handles it beautifully. A new generation of performers are reaching a mature and seasoned approach to Ives, and Donald Berman is a vital part of that achievement.

Mike Oldfield took the world of music by storm at the age of 19 in 1973 with the release of his debut album, "Tubular Bells", which hit the No.1 spot in numerous countries and has gone on to sell in excess of 16 million copies worldwide. A naturally shy man, it was not until the end of the decade that he began to play live on a regular basis. In 1981, by now a confident stage performer, he embarked on his European Adventure Tour, which took in the Montreux Festival in July, where he performed in front of an enthusiastic sold out audience.

Depeche Mode 101 is a fascinating documentary codirected by the esteemed D.A. Pennebaker (The War Room, Down from the Mountain), focusing on backstage realities of art and business during the British synthesizer band's 1988 American tour. We see managers worrying over slow ticket sales for a stand at the Rose Bowl, observe sound checks at concert sites, get a tour of the group's multiple keyboard banks, and listen with some alarm to singer David Gahane describe his steroid-based throat treatments. There are plenty of performance clips, but for music alone, disc 2 in this package contains the uninterrupted Rose Bowl show, including the plaintive "Blasphemous Rumours," the exultant drama of "Stripped," and the dreamy "Somebody." Pennebaker's promotional video "Everything Counts" is also here, but don't miss the director's recent, touching, and informative interviews with the now 40-something, individual members of Depeche Mode.
