Tom Jones is a legend in his own lifetime and there is a bewildering array of compilations available of varying quality. Choosing one is complicated by his career renaissance following his hugely successful Reload album in the nineties. Personally, I prefer to keep that aspect of his career separate from his earlier music. This compilation, focusing on the sixties and seventies, is one of the best compilations of Tom's earlier music. I slightly prefer the European double CD (Singles) but all the big British and American hits from the early part of Tom's career that really matter are on this one as well. American compilations do not always include major British hits that flopped in America but this one does.

Even as a Cream fan from right back in 1966,I'm amazed at how good they still sound now.
Even better,I'm gobsmacked at how well this compo is put together. It scores heavily by lumping the life stuff to one side ie CD2. Cream were astounding live,most nights,BUT they could also ramble on,and they were never made for very long tours,but the live disc happily captures energetic and challenging efforts.
In the studio, they were 2 different bands. As a heavy clue,their 1st record,the single Wrapping Paper was more like the bloody New Vaudeville Band! But,as the subsequent studio albums showed,all that proved was their ear for a good pop tune and they had a decent number of chart hits to show for it.

Anyone who has heard of Smokie and would like to hear some more then they need look no further. This album was by far their best, showing us their lighter side (mexican girl), inventive side (power of love), rocking side (liverpool docks - best song on the album), classic side (for a few dollars more) and humourous side (petesey's song). This album has something for everyone. If all albums were this well balanced the world would be a better place.

This two-disc retrospective traces the Canadian bard's musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire," the "folksinger" tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging from the deadpan drollery of "Tower of Song" and "Everybody Knows" to the apocalyptic anthemry of "First We Take Manhattan" and "Democracy" suggest that other labels might be more appropriate: cabaret surrealist, spiritual gadfly, sensual prophet, agent provocateur.
