American expatriate Joe Dassin was one of France's most popular singers during the late '60s and '70s, initially building his name with stylized adaptations of folk and country material from his birthplace. As his career blossomed, Dassin turned increasingly to traditional-style chansons penned by some of the genre's best writers, scoring an all-time classic with his 1975 smash "L'Ete Indien." Notorious for his perfectionism, Dassin could play the introverted romantic, but his persona also played off of American archetypes and imagery. His premature death of a heart attack in 1980 robbed French pop of one of its greatest modern-day practitioners.

Well one listen to this remastered 2 CD collection will give any fan or future convert an overview of a versatile treasure who could sing the most tender and elegant of songs and immediately display her anger and frustration, especially when it came to issues surrounding the Civil Rights Movement. The common denominator that I found in hearing all these treasures was a certain elegance, soulfulness, and pride that left do doubt about her feelings regarding any song she was singing. On the other hand, she never resorted to the histrionics of other singers and both her pain and joy were tempered and best appreciated by listening very carefully to the way she uses silence as much as her voice to interpret any given song.

Although they never had much success in America, the Euro-disco group Boney M. was a European phenomenon during the '70s. After German record producer Frank Farian (born in 1942) recorded the single "Baby Do You Wanna Bump?" (which was successful in Holland and Belgium), he created Boney M to support the song, bringing in four West Indian vocalists who had been working as session singers in Germany — Marcia Barrett (born on October 14, 1948, St. Catherines, Jamaica), Liz Mitchell (born on July 12, 1952, Clarendon, Jamaica), Maizie Williams (born on March 25, 1951, Monserrat, West Indies), and Bobby Farrell (born on October 6, 1949, Aruba, West Indies).

In his late-'70s hit-making heyday, Andy Gibb was largely dismissed as a teen pinup coasting on the coattails of his big brothers, the Bee Gees (who were then at the height of their Saturday Night Fever-era success). Indeed, hits like "I Just Want to Be Your Everything," "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water," "Shadow Dancing," "An Everlasting Love," and "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away"–all of which featured vocal, songwriting and/or production help from various Bee Gees–were fluffy AM-friendly confections, but they were extraordinarily well-crafted ones. Those tunes are all featured on this 12-song collection.

Tom Jones became one of the most popular vocalists to emerge from the British Invasion. Since the mid-'60s, Jones has sung nearly every form of popular music — pop, rock, show tunes, country, dance, and techno, he's sung it all. His actual style — a full-throated, robust baritone that had little regard for nuance and subtlety — never changed, he just sang over different backing tracks. On-stage, Jones played up his sexual appeal; it didn't matter whether he was in an unbuttoned shirt or a tuxedo, he always radiated a raw sexuality which earned him a large following of devoted female fans who frequently threw underwear on-stage. Jones' following never diminished over the decades; he was able to exploit trends, earning new fans while retaining his core following.
