"Arhontorembetika" (rembetika of the bourgeoise) was the name given to a special style of songs of the 50's that were "rebetika" written by composers of the, so called, light (european style) song. They were really very beautiful songs, with a humoristic mood, ideal for happy and joyful nights, with lot of laugh, wine, dance and flirt. The great singer Vicky Mosholiou, one of the best and most beloved in Greece, recorded 2 CD with popular "arhontorembetika", that made a huge success. This excellent collection includes, in addition to Mosholiou's songs, other happy songs, that represent the "lighter" side of folk and rembetiko composers. Enjoy a unique and rich collection of beautiful dancing songs that will bring you in the "greek kefi" mood.

Nikos Skalkottas - Concerto for Two Violins, Works For Wind Instruments

Nikos Skalkottas - Concerto for Two Violins, Works For Wind Instruments
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 405 Mb
Date: 2003

This disc begins with the thirty-five minute 'Concerto for two Violins', which was never orchestrated, sadly, by Skalkottas, but is played in the version for two pianos and two violins. It is a scintillating three movement composition with a terrifically virtuosic ten minute rondo finale. I ended up breathless and full of admiration for the composer and especially the performers for whom this music cannot have been familiar. It doesn't take long to get into Skalkottas's language. Twelve tone yes but melodic and full of Greek dance rhythms as the first movement demonstrates. A unique blend…….To listen to Skalkottas is a unique experience perhaps a little hairshirt at times but like a glass of Retsina there is nothing else quite as memorable or as addictive.

BIS' investigation of Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas' oeuvre is getting into his latest and least-known concerted repertoire with its Skalkottas: Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra (1945). It features violinists Georgios Demertzis and Simos Papanas with Vassilis Christopoulos and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra in the concerto; the same body supports pianists Maria Asteriadou and Nikolaos Samaltanos in Skalkottas' Concertino (1935) and xylophonist Dimitris Dessyllas in his tiny Characteristic Piece "Nocturnal Amusement" (1949)………..

It turns out that the cello is just about the perfect instrument to compliment the kora. The cello is legato where the kora is pointillist; it is lustrous and mellow where the kora is bright and brittle; and yet both instruments share a profound capacity for serenity, so that even as they contrast most sharply, they can remain unified in purpose. That said, in the wrong hands, a confab of cello and kora could easily devolve into a New Age snooze fest or a tedious exercise in classical music light. So the success of Chamber Music must really be credited to the remarkable musicians who created it, and to their playful, confident, and utterly transparent musical friendship.

Hailing from Cyprus’s divided capital Nicosia, and led by Antonis Antoniou, the founder of Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke, Buzz’ Ayaz creates a transfixing Eastern Mediterranean psychedelia. Their self-titled debut album is a fuzzed-out urban soundscape of dubby electronics, 70s-psych organ, growling bass clarinet, amplified folk instruments, ritual beats and Greek and Anatolian melodicism.
