Shortly after Motown compiled its first Rick James best-of, Reflections (1984), the label issued a nearly identical compilation titled simply Greatest Hits. Like Reflections, Greatest Hits compiles several of James' biggest hits to date "You and I," "Mary Jane," "Give It to Me Baby," "Super Freak," "Dance Wit' Me," "Cold Blooded," "Ebony Eyes," "17," and "You Turn Me On" while passing over many songs such as "Love Gun" and "Big Time" that didn't chart quite as well but were great regardless.

Short and sweet, this ten-track compilation hits all the high points of Rick James' career, from his 1978 number one debut single, "You and I," to the 1984 triumph "17," collecting every major hit in between while casting off James' post-1984 denouement without a second glance. But really, the casual fan looking for hits without misses won't need to go any farther than this disc. You won't find any rarities or unreleased material here.

Fire It Up is American musician Rick James' third studio album, originally released on the Motown sub-label Gordy Records. Includes the hit singles "Fire it up", "Love Gun", and "Come into My Life". Rick James's third album in 18 months may have spread the funk a little thin (or saturated the market), since Fire It Up was not as effective as his first two efforts. The usual mix of rock and R&B had some disco added, which dulled the music's edge and made it more formulaic. At the same time, James's single-entendre come ons, notably the album's biggest single, "Love Gun," were beginning to sound less provocative than just smutty. James had all the weapons for success in his arsenal, but he hadn't yet figured out a unified plan of attack, and Fire It Up was a holding action.

Rick James fans generally agree that 1981's Street Songs is his finest album – in fact, Street Songs is essential listening for anyone with even a casual interest in hardcore funk. Unfortunately, James tried to recycle the album's formula on many of his subsequent albums, and by the mid-'80s, he had become a very predictable and redundant caricature of himself. But in 1982, James was still exciting. That year's Throwin' Down, the album that followed Street Songs, falls short of essential but is still rewarding.

Rick James, was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teen years. He was in various bands before entering the U.S. Navy to avoid being drafted in the early 1960s. In 1964, James deserted to Toronto, Canada, where he formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who eventually signed a recording deal with Motown Records in 1966. James' career with the group halted after military authorities discovered his whereabouts and eventually convicted James on a one-year prison term related to the draft charges.
