With this and several other albums issued in 2019, Eloquence celebrates the art of Thurston Dart, the harpsichordist, conductor and editor who played a leading role in the early-music revival in postwar Britain. After his death in 1971 at the age of just 49, his fellow harpsichordist Igor Kipnis paid fulsome tribute to 'a man of many parts', whose 1954 volume on The Interpretation of Musichad attained testamentary authority among his fellow musicians, matched by the skill, style and flourish of his many recordings: 'He was the ideal musicologist-performer.'In 1960 Dart convened and directed a six-strong ensemble of trumpets and trombones to record a sequence of music written for performance at the court of King James I by a twenty-piece band of sackbuts and cornetts known as the Royal Wind Music. Part-books of their repertoire were edited and in some cases reconstructed by Dart and his colleague Trevor Jones, and the result is a splendid compilation of dances and fanfares by members of the king's musicalretinue including the violist and lutenist 'Giovanni Coprario' who, born in London in 1570 as John Cooper, changed his name in the early seventeenth century, doubtless to add foreign lustreto his reputation.

This is a marvelous release, equally perfect in conception, execution, and engineering. The program locates the intellectual origins of the American avant-garde composers Morton Feldman and John Cage not in postwar European developments, but in the music of Erik Satie, who with each decade seems a more pioneering figure. Feldman and Cage here seem not modernists, but postmodernists. Front and center at the beginning is Feldman's masterpiece Rothko Chapel (1967), a chamber-ensemble-and-chorus evocation of the Houston, Texas, chapel adorned with paintings by, and partly designed by, the Abstract Expressionist painter Mark Rothko.

Label: London Symphony Orchestra | Release Year: 2016

This new release in the LSO Live cycle of Rachmaninovs complete symphonies features his Symphony No. 1. The piece was composed in 1895 at his Ivanovka estate in Tambov, Russia. The premiere was a disaster due to poor conductor performance and under-rehearsal, but the score was rediscovered after the composers death and has since been frequently performed. English composer and professor Robert Simpson calls the First Symphony a powerful work in its own right convinced, individual, finely constructed, and achieving a genuinely tragic and heroic expression.

The recordings on Sweden's BIS label by Israeli-born flutist Sharon Bezaly have exposed a great deal of neglected and often highly virtuosic repertory, much of its brought within reach by Bezaly's unusual circular breathing technique. She's a remarkable flutist, but it's her repertory selection that really sets her apart from the crowd. She actually throws in some chestnuts, like Cécile Chaminade's Concertino for flute and orchestra, Op. 107, this time around, but the highlight is a really nifty and unknown little work: the Flute Concert in D major, Op. 283, of Carl Reinecke, composed in 1908. Its three movements reduce Wagnerian language to a compact concerto in all kinds of ingenious ways. Sample the first movement, where the flute provides a charming pastoral element against a varying backdrop. The other works are each characteristic of their composer, even including the very early Largo and Allegro for flute and strings of Tchaikovsky.

It's safe to say that most people who become cognizant of this very obscure album's existence will do so through a Mike Oldfield discography. David Bedford conducted the choir and strings on Oldfield's Hergest Ridge album, and Oldfield returns the favor by guesting as the soloist on this 45-minute Bedford orchestral work, recorded the same year (1974). That being said, the potential purchaser is warned that this is not a guitar concerto, nor a "in-all-but-name" Oldfield album in spite of his significant contribution…
