In The Big Country Gregory Peck plays a seafaring man who heads west to marry Carroll Baker, the daughter of rancher Charles Bickford. Bickford is currently embroiled in a water-rights feud with covetous Burl Ives, so both he and his daughter are hoping that Peck can take care of himself. But Peck, who doesn't belief in fisticuffs, appears to be a coward, especially when challenged by Bickford's cocksure foreman Charlton Heston. The far-from-cowardly Peck decides to distance himself from the machismo overload at the Bickford spread, settling for a romance with headstrong schoolmarm Jean Simmons, whose water-rich lands are being fought over by the two warring ranchers. When Jean is kidnapped by Ives' no-good son Chuck Connors, Peck decides to take action.

An American widower and his 18-year-old daughter live on a Caribbean houseboat. Romance and adventure ensue when they invite the bored nephew of a millionaire to leave his uncle's yacht and stay with them. Though there is an immediate spark between the girl and her new friend, romance is delayed by the arrival of the nephew's former business partner. Together, the two young men invest in an underwater treasure-hunting expedition that unfortunately only brings up a few skeletons. The disappointed nephew returns to his uncle's yacht and there realizes that he is in love with the girl. He returns to ask for the girl's hand. Her father is delighted, leaves the newlyweds to their honeymoon and sails his houseboat to a new place.

Aging movie star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) has arrived in Tokyo to film a Suntory whiskey advertisement (a reference to real-life Hollywood actors who do foreign celebrity advertising, including Sofia Coppola's father, Francis Ford Coppola, who did Suntory commercials with Akira Kurosawa during the filming of Kagemusha). Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is the young wife of a celebrity photographer on assignment in Tokyo. Left behind by her husband when he goes to his photo shoots, she is unsure of her present and her future and about the man she has married…
