Schubert's publisher Tobias Haslinger published fourteen songs under the title "Schwanengesang" one year after the composer’s death. Schubert had written them down in rapid succession shortly before his death, which indicates that they were partly conceived as a song cycle. The German bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera from 1998 until 2011 and has also appeared at the Bayerische, Hamburgische and Wiener Staatsoper and San Francisco Opera. He has sung with the London, Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, the Berlin and Dresden Staatskapelle, Orchestra National de France, and the Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles Symphony Orchestras under conductors including Thielemann, Haitink, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, Harnoncourt, Luisi, von Dohnányi, Nelsons and Gardiner. Hanno. In addition to concert and opera, Hanno Müller-Brachmann has a great passion for the Lied. He has given recitals in Berlin, Graz, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Paris and Lausanne, at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, Berlin Festwochen and the Edinburgh Festival, among others.

A delightful anthology of lovely songs transcribed for clarinet and strings by Fabian Müller that will surely be welcomed by all lovers of the clarinet – and indeed perhaps appeal to followers of the morning radio programmes of Classic FM, who often feature miniature masterpieces of this kind. Fabio Di Càsola creates a true vocal line. He plays gently and phrases persuasively, with warmly beautiful timbre, so that one hardly misses the words of these outstanding songs (except perhaps in Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’, Grieg’s ‘Ich liebe dich’ and Schumann’s ‘Mondnacht’).

As well as being one of the 20th century's supreme orchestral composers, Sibelius produced around 100 songs. Yet he wrote very little original music for voice and orchestra. The shining exception is Luonnotar, for soprano and orchestra, which is one of his greatest achievements in any genre, but nothing else in his vocal output comes close to matching that work's dramatic power and originality.

Apparently, Koželuch had what is called "a big mouth" and did not hesitate to attack his contemporaries, Mozart and Beethoven at the head - Beethoven who made him well, besides. Well, no one will ever claim that Koželuch is equal to the deaf genius; But one can still do him justice and listen to his symphonies, written between the years 1785 and the early nineteenth century, in a Viennese language very in phase with his time, but some turns orient themselves nevertheless towards the first Schubert. About thirty symphonies are known to him, which is not enormous when one considers that his work counts some four hundred works. In addition to dozens of concertos and serenades, he has written more than sixty trios and as many piano sonatas, as well as impressive quantities of quartets, ballets, Lieder, cantatas, as well as a few operas - not so much as regards the latter form. Here are recorded four of his symphonies from the period 1785-1790, when he enjoyed a solid reputation in Vienna as a talented composer. In particular, there is a symphony in G minor of great dramatic force.

With generally brisk tempos, a mixture of daring and wit, and a keen sense to balance emotion and intellect, pianist Florian Uhlig stands as a sort of cross between Vladimir Horowitz and Alfred Brendel. He has impressed concert audiences with his bold and incisive interpretations in a range of repertory, while on disc he has scored notable success in his traversal of the complete works for piano and orchestra by Schumann and Shostakovich. He possesses a technique that allows him to play the most challenging keyboard fare, from works by Liszt and Chopin to music of Prokofiev and Rachmaninov.
