This expansive box set from Rhino features all nine of the Doobie Brothers' studio albums from their original 1970s Warner Bros. run plus their 1983 Farewell Tour live album. Beginning with their 1971 self-titled debut, when the band was fronted by founding singer/guitarist Tom Johnston, through 1980's Michael McDonald-led One Step Closer, it covers their two major eras as they slowly shifted from boogie rock bar band into the soulful soft rock giants of their later years. Hits like "China Grove," "Black Water," "Takin' It to the Streets," and "What a Fool Believes" are all here as well as their first live album, which mostly features their late-period lineup with the addition of a couple of special Johnston appearances that serve as an end cap to their career. Although the Doobies would reunite again in the late '80s, their original Warner Bros. years remain their best-known period.

The bulk of the DVD is this Berlin concert of 6 November 1971. This is one of the last recorded concerts with this band, which disbanded totally later that month. It features Miles on electric trumpet, Keith Jarrett on electric piano and electric organ, Michael Henderson on electric bass, Leon Chancler on drums, and Mtume and Don Alias on percussion. This band is the last one that has direct links to the "Bitches Brew" era, with Gary Bartz still in the band and Jarrett having taken over the two keyboards when Chick Corea left the band in 1970.

This enigmatic, artsy horror film from the early 1970's is a lost classic waiting to be rediscovered. The dreamlike storyline echoes elements of Night Of The Living Dead and Carnival Of Souls but manages to chart a surrealistic course all its own, carefully weaving shocks into its hazy mood to build a very personalized sort of nightmare feel. Marianna Hill and Michael Greer offer subtle, nicely stylized performances, both slowly sliding from self-possessed cool into numb fear in a believable style. There are also effective character turns by Elisha Cook, Jr. as a drunk whose ramblings serve as an early warning of the horrors to come and Bennie Robinson's supremely unnerving turn as an otherworldly agent of the evil that infects the film's small-town setting…..

Two of Nancy Wilson's more fascinating, if less commercially successful '70s sets - 1971's Kaleidoscope and 1973's I Know I Love Him - are reissued on this release from David Nathan's Soul Music label. Kaleidoscope features knockout versions of "If I Were Your Woman," popularized by Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine." On the later album, Wilson is backed by the Crusaders with arranging and conducting from Don Sebesky. It's a deep gem - laid-back but resonant late-night listening for serious fans of any of the involved. A. Scott Galloway provides typically detailed liner notes packed with information and engaging analysis.

Sounds of the Seventies was a 38-volume series issued by Time-Life during the late 1980s and early-to-mid 1990s, spotlighting pop music of the 1970s. Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "Sounds of the Seventies" series covered a specific time period, including individual years in some volumes, and different parts of the decade (for instance, the early 1970s) in others; in addition, some volumes covered specific trends, such as music popular on album-oriented rock stations on the FM band. Each volume was issued on either compact disc, cassette or (with volumes issued prior to 1991) vinyl record.

Sony repackaged and re-released five LPs by Mountain on Windfall – Climbing!, Nantucket Sleighride, Flowers of Evil, Twin Peaks, and Avalanche – as a slipcased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but isn't recommended for the casual fan.
