The Avett Brothers long ago figured out how to fill the corners of cavernous arenas with earnest energy using primarily acoustic instruments. Seth Avett gave advance warning via social media that this album would represent a socially conscious turn for him, his brother Scott, and their longtime bandmates. They push the folk and pop-punk threads in their music to galvanizing extremes on this Rick Rubin-produced record, while treating national concerns with the warmheartedness that they usually reserve for inner and interpersonal yearnings. The performances are often buoyant (“Locked Up,” “High Steppin’”) and the writing openly emotional, but several songs (including “Tell the Truth,” “New Woman’s World,” and “We Americans”) give priority to expressions of penitence. “I am a son of Uncle Sam, and I struggle to understand the good and evil,” Seth sings, his delivery crisp and purposeful, “but I’m doing the best I can, in a place built on stolen land with stolen people.” During dense folk ballads like “Long Story Short” and “C Sections and Railway Trestles,” the stories convey a sense of caretaking responsibility for younger generations, the Avetts striving to make all of these gestures feel ennobling.

In a lengthy mission statement announcing the album’s release, Seth Avett said the band “didn’t make a record that was meant to comment on the sociopolitical landscape that we live in. We did, however, make an album that is obviously informed by what is happening now on a grander scale all around us… because we are a part of it and it is a part of us. Closer Than Together is a record of obvious American origin – a creation that fittingly could only come about through hard work, measured freedom, awe-inspiring landscapes, and perfectly flawed individualism.

The documentary May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers, released in 2017 and directed by Judd Apatow, is an intensely human portrait of siblings who are frustratingly flawed and incredibly talented, and their remarkable band, including bassist Bob Crawford, cellist Joe Kwon and fiddler Tania Elizabeth. You quickly understand why producer Rick Rubin—working with them for a sixth time on The Avett Brothers—is captivated not just by the Avetts' magical tones (Scott's soft North Carolina affect and Seth's slightly sharper twang), but also Everlys-esque harmonies and melodies that seem to come as naturally as breathing. There's also a disarming sincerity.

The Third Gleam marks a return to the Avett Brothers’ roots, both sonically and with Seth & Scott playing as a trio with longtime bassist Bob Crawford. The eight tracks capture their personal experiences and perspectives on undeniably timely, universal themes: isolation, gun violence, incarceration, historical prejudice, mortality, resilience, love, hope, redemption. 12 years in the making, this is the third installment of the brothers’ ongoing Gleam series.

The first thing that strikes me about The Talbott Brothers is their genuine artistry. You get the sense that they really love what they’re doing and would be singing even if we weren’t listening. I love that. But imagine a few other pairs of brothers, like Bo and Bear Rinehart or Scott and Seth Avett. Exactly what you love about those guys, you’ll love about Nick and Tyler Talbott. The opening “We Got Love” is full of bright energy that you’re sure to enjoy. The harmonies are top notch. It sounds like two voices made for each other. The whole sound is optimistic and hopeful. It’s the kind of pop folk sound that helped to motivate the very founding of this site, so of course we love it.
