Widely acclaimed session guitarist Hiram Bullock pays homage to guitar innovator (and obvious influence) Jimi Hendrix on this dynamic live set. Recorded in 2004 in Germany with legendary jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham and the WDR Big Band on board, Bullock and crew burn through seven Hendrix classics including "Foxy Lady," "Voodoo Child," and "Manic Depression." With Bullock's fiery fret-shredding leading the way, PLAYS THE MUSIC OF JIMI HENDRIX is not only a fitting tribute to the guitar hero, but a muscular, exciting workout in its own right. The only sad thing is that this great guitarist can not even play anymore - RIP. But this album is very great, and a must have for every Jimi fan.

In September-October 1959, the great Louis Armstrong recorded an album paying homage to his mentor and first employer, the legendary cornetist Joe “King” Oliver (1885-1938). This gave Louis and his All Stars the opportunity to explore some tunes the trumpeter had never recorded before, and some others he had not played in decades. The LP,"Satchmo Plays King Olive"r (Audio- Fidelity AFSD-5930), was wonderfully recorded in stereo (which was a new technology at the time), providing us an amazing perspective of Armstrong’s pure sound.

Melodic rockers Seven Hard Years (a.k.a. 7HY) certainly didn’t waste any time getting a third album out. Just one year after releasing the very enjoyable Stories We Tell, 7HY is back with a new album titled For the Record. It finds former Shy drummer Alan Kelly (who also handles guitar, bass and keys here) continuing his collaboration with vocalist Shawn Pelata (Final Sign) as well as the arrival of guitarist Danny Beardsley (The Parallax Method).

An outstanding veteran pianist from Spain, Tete Montoliu was born blind. He learned to read music in Braille when he was seven and developed impressive technique on piano. He recorded with Lionel Hampton in 1956, had his first session as a leader in 1958, and played with the touring Roland Kirk in 1963. Through the years, he also worked with such visiting Americans as Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson, and even Anthony Braxton. Tete Montoliu's visits to the U.S. were very infrequent, but his SteepleChase albums (starting in 1971) are generally available; he also cut one date for Contemporary (1979) and recorded for Enja and Soul Note.

All of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's early recordings are quite fascinating, for during 1957-1964, aspects of his style at times hinted at Dixieland, swing, Monk, and Cecil Taylor, sometimes at the same time. For this CD reissue (a straight reproduction of the original New Jazz LP), Lacy teams up with pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Buell Neidlinger, and drummer Elvin Jones for seven Thelonious Monk compositions. The typical standbys (such as "'Round Midnight," "Straight No Chaser," and "Blue Monk") are avoided in favor of more complex works such as "Four in One," "Bye-Ya," and "Skippy"; the sweet ballad "Ask Me Now" is a highpoint. Lacy always had an affinity for Monk's music and, even nearly 40 years later, this set is a delight.

Jazz / Cool / West Coast Jazz / Baritone Saxophone

Gerry Mulligan's first session as a leader and one of the first to showcase his baritone was recorded in New York shortly before he relocated to Los Angeles and formed his famous pianoless quartet with Chet Baker. There is a piano on this set (George Wallington) but Mulligan's writing (all seven selections are his) for a two-baritone nonet that also features trumpeter Nick Travis and tenor-saxophonist Allan Eager is already in his influential "cool style"; best-known among the originals is "Bweebida Bwobbida." Two numbers on the CD reissue feature a smaller unit out of the group with "Mulligan's Too" being an extended workout for the leader and Eager.
