Hailing originally from Montreal in Canada, Eric Guy did the rounds in rock bands as a teenager before enrolling in the Jazz program at Vanier college, where he studied electric and acoustic bass with session veteran Vic Angelillo, arranging with Christopher Smith and composition under Joe Sullivan.

The Keno Harriehausen Quartet creates a world of sound between dedicated, living jazz improvisation and a musical-compositional language deeply rooted in European culture. From Shostakovich to Jan Johansson; from Ravel to Gabarek.
Originally founded as a classical jazz quartet featuring saxophone, piano, contrabass and drums in Amsterdam, the quartet initially brought together the common enthusiasm for the power and energy that can emerge at the moment of improvised music. With this sound, inspired by John Coltrane and Keith Jarrett, the quartet won several competitions in Belgium and the Netherlands (international Zeeland Jazz Award, Ujazz Award, Mechelen Jazz Contest, Sena Jazzprijs).

Alice Coltrane never had an easy time of it with critics. That she was able to pursue her rugged musical vision in the midst of controversy (many claimed she was "the Yoko Ono of the John Coltrane Quartet," in that she replaced McCoy Tyner when Trane decided to shift the focus of his band) is, in retrospect, a heroic act, though, humble as she is, she would never see it that way. This double-LP live set recorded at UCLA in 1978, reveals in total the ambitious and profound free jazz and universal musical frontiers Ms. Coltrane was able to explore in both small and larger groups.

Listen to the connection between all five players on the recordings, "One From None" and "Book Nine" and it's quickly apparent that the incredible musical vibe is no accident. Co-leaders of a group that plays a fascinating blend of creative jazz, the blues and wild electric grooves, Samuel Blaser and Michael Bates have assembled a group already with a deep musical history. Since meeting in New York around 2004, they have been talking about co-leading a band but due to their own touring schedules it took a few years. Once the choice was made however, finding the musicians was easy; everyone was already connected.

Did you ever get a bit envious listening to a recording and thinking the band is having way too much fun making music? I'm not saying Northern Spy stirs up jealousy, but damn the trio of bassist Michael Bates, saxophonist Michael Blake and drummer Jeremy "Bean" Clemons are up to some serious jollification here.
