This week, Victor Reyes is recording his score for the upcoming psychological thriller Cold Skin. The film is directed by Xavier Gens (Hitman, The Divide, Frontier(s)) and stars Ray Stevenson, David Oakes and Aura Garrido. The movie is based on the book by Albert Sanchez Piñol of the same title and follows a young man who is approaching a remote island on the edge of the Antarctic Circle to relieve a weather observer who has been stationed there in solitude. But all he finds is a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. Jesus Olmo (28 Weeks Later) has written the screenplay. Denise O’ Dell and Mark Albela are producing the project. Cold Skin is expected to premiere in 2017.

Recording of “Under My Skin” began in 2015 under Grammy-winning producer Blue Miller, who draws on his experience with acclaimed acts such as Bob Seger. Six cuts recorded in Nashville with some of Music City’s finest musicians with Blue Miler at the helm, and four in the UK with Stuart McCredie producing. Mick’s raw gravel vocal holds the attention throughout the 10 cuts. The material – written by Mick or co-written with Blue Miller – focuses on Mick’s dreams and past trials and tribulations. The songs are fairly versatile, and he doesn’t stay within the confines of pure blues. It is very much “balls out” on the rockier up-tempo stuff, but offers a good balance with the light and shade of the more laid-back tracks. His guitar work is accomplished, technically top drawer and they are his own licks, he’s not a “Borrower.” It’s a good game of tones too.

Elvin keeps the cornpone good-ole-boy schtick down to an acceptable level on this, perhaps his most serious solo album to date. Although Bishop's good-time approach is still evident on tunes like "I'm Gone," "Right Now Is the Hour," the acoustic "Radio Boogie" (with a guest shot from Charlie Musselwhite) and "Country Blues," the playing and lyrics get much deeper and more serious with "Shady Lane," "The Skin They're In," "Middle Aged Man" and "Long Shadows." Perhaps the most cohesive album he's made to date, revealing an artist coming to grips with his muse, his age and his art, all at once.
