"Smokin'" is a Smokey Robinson live album released in 1978. Although it opens with "The Tracks of My Tears," Smokin' isn't an oldie revue heavy on hits with the Miracles. Instead, this double album is very much of its time, relying heavily on recent hits with everything, even the classic '60s sides, given a bit of a disco makeover. While these new arrangements hardly trump the originals, they make for a better overall experience: perhaps this isn't Smokey at his absolute peak, but it is a reflection of a legend working hard to build upon his legacy without living in the past.

It's an irresistible budget-priced summary of their prime Motown recordings. There may be a couple of noteworthy songs missing, but many of their best-known songs are here, including "The Tracks of My Tears," "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tears of a Clown" and "I Second That Emotion." Serious fans will want something more extensive, but this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans, considering its length and price. That doesn't erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good.

Smokey Robinson's 1979 solo release "Where There's Smoke…", called his "finest album" by Robert Christgau in The Village Voice, includes his biggest solo single, the top five smash Cruisin'. Robinson also modernizes and updates his own song Get Ready, a huge hit for both the Temptations in the 1960s and Rare Earth in the '70s.

Smokey Robinson's most successful post-Miracles solo album, "Being With You" has sold over 900,000 copies and peaked at number 10 in the US, propelled by the million-selling hit single title track. Seeking a more contemporary, modern sound, Robinson sought out the hot producer of the day, George Tobin (Tiffany, Kim Carnes) to work his magic behind the board.

The series normally focuses on sounds of the 70s – but here, they do a great job of showcasing solo Smokey moments from those years, mixed with really groundbreaking tracks with The Miracles – almost presenting them all together as if Smokey and the group were a key precursor to 70s soul. The set features a whopping 23 tracks – over 80 minutes of music.

It also featured the song "Baby Come Close", his first solo hit single, and the single "Just My Soul Responding", a protest song dealing with ghetto life in America, and the plight of the American Indian. "And I Don't Love You" peaked at #106 Billboard and #33 R&B charts, and "I Can't Find" at #109 Billboard and #41 R&B charts. The third and final single, Robinson's "Yes It's You Lady" only peaked at #107 Billboard, without entering the R&B charts.
