Selwyn Birchwood is among the most extraordinary young stars in the blues. His deep familiarity with blues tradition allows him to bust the genre wide open, adding new sounds, colors and textures all delivered with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma. Since the 2014 release of his Alligator Records debut, Don’t Call No Ambulance, Birchwood’s meteoric rise from playing small Florida clubs to headlining international festival stages is nothing short of phenomenal, as he continues to set the contemporary blues world on fire. The album received the Blues Music Award and Living Blues Critics’ Award for Best Debut Album Of 2014, and he won the 2015 Blues Blast Rising Star Award.

Svart Records proudly presents Sonny Rollins with the Heikki Sarmanto trio, in an extremely rare live performance at Finland Festival in the summer of 1972. Available for the first time, fifty years after it was initially recorded, this incredible show features Sarmanto on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, his brother Pekka Sarmanto on bass and Esko Rosnell on drums. Legend of American Jazz, “Saxophone Colossus” Sonny Rollins hand-picked Heikki Sarmanto and his Finnish trio for this night of improvisation and mutual respect that culminated in years of collaboration after.

Scott Keeton and The Deviants released their new CD 100 Mile Blues, April 6, 1999. JSP signed the band last fall and this is their first release with them. All twelve tracks on this disc are original and range from deep guitar fueled blues such as "Nothing Left to Say," to the drag ‘em out "Back Door Shuffle," from the Dwight Yokum-flavored, "Look At That Girl" to the lyrical romantic playing of "Heart Break" and "Eye On You." It is great stuff and will particularly appeal to those of you with a taste for other cross-generic show stoppers such as The Paladins.
Keeton, based in Oklahoma City where this CD was recorded, has soaked in the musical sounds of the region – not only blues and rock but also some gritty Southern soul as well. His unwavering commitment to the heart of its songs, a guitar style that could storm a besieged embassy, and a more than on the money vocal style push the listener to a special place. He has amassed twelve years of blues-playing experience, and has been the toast of the South and Southwestern blues clubs for at least seven years.

The debut album by The Misers 'Amplified Life Stories' from 2009 on Sonny Jim Records. While this group was well known in the UK, it seems that they never have gotten much airplay or exposure in the States or, for that matter, anywhere else in the world.

Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band is the premier blues band in Canada. Their saxophone-driven jump blues provided a major inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi's Blues Brothers, who included Walsh's tunes, "Everything I Need (Almost)" and "Shotgun Blues," on their 1978 debut album, Briefcase Full of Blues. Formed in 1969 by Walsh and his brother, Richard "Hock" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band endured continuous personnel turnover. More than 18 musicians came and went, including Gene Taylor, who went on to play with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kenny Neal, who joined after leaving the employ of Buddy Guy and relocating to Toronto.

Talk about raw, check out Chicago’s Iceman Robinson’s I’ve Never Been Loved. With a healthy dose of distortion on his guitar, this cat takes the rough-hewn Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, Lil’ Ed Williams style to a new level of raucous on jumped boogies like "My Baby’s Comin’ Home," "Sadie" and the instrumental "Iceman’s Boogie." His "Too Old a Cat (To Be Fooled by a Kitten)" is a hilarious autobiographical anecdote while his infectious "Chicago Lakefront" could be a new anthem for the Windy City. And his sick slide playing on "Workin’ Man" is closer in spirit to Sonny Sharrock than Sonny Rhodes. Drummer Chris Millar nails this one down with crisp snare crackle and heavy-footed bass drum accents that barely mask the relentless guitar amp buzz. Slick it ain’t-and that’s a good thing.
