Spider-Man Saga #1 (One-Shot)
CBR | Marvel Comics | Released Oct 27 2010 | 36 Pages (c2c) | 29.58 MB

A free Spider-Man promo comic book with a December 2010 cover date promoting the upcoming Spider-Man storyline "Big" as well as telling a synopsis of what has happened in the Spider-Man series over the last few years. Put otherwise, a single issue that provides an updated history of Spider-Man and friends and enemies. This one is a sleeper; that is, nobody seemed to pay much attention to it but it really does update fans and followers of Spider-Man who have somehow gotten lost amidst all the crossover events Marvel has had recently on where ol' webhead is, now. This comic book is in full color and in the standard 32-page format with the usual ads, and was distributed on a limited basis; free with purchase of Spider-Man comic books while supplies last. This was done with almost no fanfare, nary a mention in the marvel online news, save for its title embedded in a release list--even its solicitation is a simple one-liner, given that Marvel (and all comic book publishers, for that matter) always punctuates its solicits with exclamation points. I recommend this one. Writer(s): Mike Fichera, J D Korejko, Rob London.

First we have to clear up this thing about nomenclature: after the multi-issue crossover event, Marvel Comics' entire Ultimate imprint has been relaunched under the "Ultimate Comics" brand; in my (posted in Avaxhome by yours truly), is this brand's very first title to be released. Seemingly from its second issue the brand reverted to the original Ultimate Spider-Man title. However, it is now clear in Marvel's library and catalog classification that the title officially remains " Comics " with the words Ultimate and Spider-Man in boldface, although the comic book itself is simply titled Ultimate Spider-Man. For accuracy I'll use the library title. Anyway we all know this is the current ongoing series. For Issue #4 ol' webhead squares off with Mysterio.

+ Web of Spider-man Issue #1

is the name of a comic book series starring Spider-Man published by Marvel Comics for 129 issues between 1985 and 1995. It replaced as the third major Spider-Man title of the time. After #129 in October 1995, the title was renamed and started again at #1. After four issues of Web of Scarlet Spider, the series was cancelled to make way for the new title. In October 14, 2009, Web of Spider-Man relaunched with issue one having a Kaine centered story written by J.M. DeMatteis, as well as a Spider-Girl story by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz and still another bonus story. Issue #2 ties in with the new storyline "The Gauntlet" with the origin of Electro. And just like Issue #1, almost a giant issue what with the backup Spider-Girl story.

brings a great close to the Electro storyline and is a satisfying first chapter in series direction. Waid's work strikes all the right chords and creates an atmosphere ripe for the return of more old school Spidey villains. The art by Paul Azaceta is appropriate to the reverse-throwback tone the issue takes. His rendering of Spider-Man and Jonah hearken back to silver and bronze age depictions of the characters with a dark shadow cast over it. However the real treat in this issue was seeing Waid bring his story full circle in what amounts to a love letter to the newspaper industry and silver and bronze age comic storytelling.

+ Amazing Spider-Man Issues #1-620 Complete

I must say issues #621 and #622 could not have been more different as day and night (noticed the covers?). As I mentioned previously, Dan Slott is the weakest of those who have handled the Gauntlet storyline, and issue #621 certainly confirms it. He's not bad; he's just so...so middle-of-the-road neutral, as if he is scared of treading on sensitive issues, like the sexual chemistry between Spidey and the Black Cat, for one. Only Michael Lark's great artwork rescues #621 from the bland box--he has this ability to capture Spider-Man in motion at odd moments--unfortunately, Slott does not give that much action to work with. Issue #622, on the other hand, with Fred Van Lente and artist Joe Quinnones soars. Marvel editors must have heard all the complaints about poor Slott. Where he (Slott) was dull and boring, Van Lente is funny and inspired. And the bonus story by Greg Wiseman and artist Luke Ross more than hold its own with the main feature. What else can I say? Yes, the Amazing Spider-man is back on track. Oh, and these are high quality Minutemen scans.

+ Amazing Spider-Man Issues #1-617 Complete

Among those writers who have had their go with the ongoing Amazing Spider-Man storyline (Joe Kelly, Mark Waid and Fred Van Lente), Dan Slott's work with this issue #618 is the weakest. The previous three before him have revived and re-invigorated the status quo of Marvel's "flagship" series, including Spidey's Rogue's Gallery to place the title among Marvel's very best, and such was the quality of their work that Slott's turn seems average in comparison. I can say issue #618 featuring the villain Mysterio is still okay, though, carried as it is by the momentum generated by the previous creative teams, and mostly because of the art of Marcos Martin. A Minutemen scan.
