Alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth formed The Artistics in 1974. They played their first gig as Talking Heads opening for the Ramones at CBGB on June 20, 1975, and signed to Sire Records in 1977. The group released their first single, "Love Building on Fire" in February that year. In March 1977, they added Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), formerly of Jonathan Richman's band The Modern Lovers. Their first album, Talking Heads: 77, was released soon afterwards. The album received considerable acclaim and spawned what became the group's first chart single, "Psycho Killer".

"The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" is a 2003 special issue of American magazine Rolling Stone, and a related book published in 2005. The lists presented were compiled based on votes from selected rock musicians, critics, and industry figures, and predominantly feature British and American music from the 1960s and 1970s. From 2007 onwards, the magazine published similarly titled lists in other countries around the world.
