Featuring early recordings for Berry Gordy's Tamla, Motown, Miracle, Gordy and Mel-O-Dy labels, plus others released on Anna, Tri-Phi and Harvey, all labels with Gordy associations, Motor City celebrates the beginning of a dynasty that would go on to generate more hits than any other independently owned record company in the world. In particular it explores the flourishing male vocal group sound that played such a significant role in the evolution of doo wop into soul. In the 1950's Detroit was a jazz city, a thriving metropolis, with plentiful work in the car plants, and a lively nightclub scene, but by the end of the decade the sound of the city was changing.

Upon its release in 2019, You're the Man was billed as a "lost" album – an album intended to appear between Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterwork What's Going On and 1973's Let's Get It On. The story isn't quite so simple. Even though Motown slated a release for an album, there's no real indication that You're the Man was ever close to completion, and this compilation – available as a double LP or digitally – doesn't make a convincing case that it was. Part of the problem may be that the material comprising the second half of the 2019 release is a grab bag of session material containing two Christmas songs; a jam with Bohannon where Gaye talks to the listener through the song called "Checking Out (Double Clutch)"; and three new mixes by Salaam Remi, a producer who earned Grammy nominations for his work on the Fugees' 1996 album, The Score, and Amy Winehouse's 2007 record, Back to Black.

Lost somewhat in the bounty of previously unreleased material distributed across the deluxe editions of Marvin Gaye's 1971-1981 studio albums, this performance appeared in totality on the second disc for What's Going On. Eighteen years later, newly mixed by John Morales, it gets an appropriate separate release with in-depth contextualization from Gaye biographer David Ritz. Context here is crucial, and there is a lot of it. For starters, the occasion was Washington, D.C.'s Marvin Gaye Day, the events of which culminated in the reluctantly present singer's first concert in four years.

Wonder's "classic period", which is widely considered to have ended in 1977, was noted for his funky keyboard style, personal control of production, and series of songs integrated with one another to make a concept album. In 1979, Wonder made use of the early music sampler Computer Music Melodian through his composition of the soundtrack album Stevie Wonder's Journey Through "The Secret Life of Plants". It was also his first digital recording, and one of the earliest popular albums to use the technology, which Wonder used for all subsequent recordings. Wonder's 1970s albums are regarded as very influential; the Rolling Stone Record Guide (1983) wrote they "pioneered stylistic approaches that helped to determine the shape of pop music for the next decade"

"Trouble Man" is a soundtrack and twelfth studio album by American soul singer Marvin Gaye, released on December 8, 1972, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. As the soundtrack to the 1972 Blaxploitation film of the same name, the Trouble Man soundtrack was a more contemporary move for Gaye, following his landmark politically charged album "What's Going On."

"Talking Book" is the 15th studio album by American singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder, released on October 28, 1972, on the Tamla label for Motown Records. The album is widely noted for being the signal recording of Wonder's "classic period". The sound of the album is sharply defined by Wonder's keyboard work, especially with the synthesizers he incorporated. His use of the Hohner clavinet model C on "Superstition" is widely regarded as one of the definitive tracks featuring the instrument.

"In Our Lifetime" is the sixteenth studio album by soul musician Marvin Gaye, released January 15, 1981, on Motown label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place at Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California, Seawest Recording Studio in Honolulu, Hawaii, and at Odyssey Studios in London, England, throughout 1979 and 1980 (and abruptly remixed in 1981 by Motown). The album cover was designed by Neil Breeden. Gaye's final album for Motown before leaving for Columbia Records, the album was the follow-up to the commercial failure of Here, My Dear, a double album which chronicled the singer's divorce from Anna Gordy. Entirely written, produced, arranged, and mixed by Gaye, In Our Lifetime? was a departure for Gaye from the disco stylings of his previous two studio efforts and was seen as one of the best albums of the singer's late-Motown period.
