In 1623, when the Thirty Years War was raging, Europe was torn apart by the confrontation between Protestant and Catholic peoples. Schütz and Schein, close friends with a deep-rooted Lutheran faith, were thoroughly in accordance with the spirit of their time when they wrote these works imbued with frugality, humility, even austerity. Yet these two great minds were still driven by a burning passion, paradoxically very attached to Italianate style, which is very evident here.

The Fantaisie sur la Tempête de Shakespeare was composed shortly after Berlioz had won the coveted Prix de Rome (at the fourth attempt) with his cantata Sardanapale, and was originally conceived as a concert overture, with chorus. After various re-workings of the material, the four-movement Fantaisie, as recorded here, became the finale of Berlioz’s ‘monodrama’ Lélio – a juxtaposition of existing material interlinked with dramatic monologues recited by the ‘artist’ at the centre of the work.

Quand une tornade apparaît dans les eaux au sud de Boston, ancien chasseur de tempête Joe Randall est intrigué par la météo inhabituelle. Mais comme tornades commencent à frapper sur le rivage de Boston, Joe se rend vite compte ce n'est pas avant la tempête ordinaire. Comme les tempêtes menacent de déplacer à l'intérieur, les citoyens de Boston se retrouvent piégés dans une tempête tournant mortel à la minute. Avec la ville en état de siège, Joe, sa sœur Maddy et son ancien partenaire à courir tempête Lee se rendent compte qu'ils ont affaire à un phénomène météorologique jamais vu appelé Stonados.

Filippo Ruge (1725-1767) was born in Rome, where he was a famous traverso player and a member of the prestigious Congregation of St. Cecilia. Later he settles in Paris, where he became a fashionable flautist and composer, soloist in the “Concerts spirituels”, orchestra conductor, and editor and promoter of Italian music in the French capital. In Paris he performed his own symphony “La tempête suivie du calme” (for strings and horns!), one of the most striking examples of French musical descriptivism.
