This is their third album, prepared for CD from the original master tapes.
Ten Years After's third album is one of those artifacts that simply screams late '60s, which is to say its production is more than a little trippy, and it's also all over the stylistic map. "I Can't Live Without Lydia," for example, features keyboardist Chick Churchill making vaguely Brubeck-ian noises on up to four overdubbed pianos simultaneously. The next track, "Skoobly-Ooobly-Doobob," is a brief scat blues improvisation with guitar hero Alvin Lee playing and singing in unison, as Ric Lee's drums, just barely audible, putter about in both stereo channels seemingly at random…

SSSSH is one of Ten Years After's best studio albums, although like its predecessor, "Stonedhenge" (albeit to a lesser degree), it's something of a period piece. It's not a straight blues album, by any means; "If You Should Love Me," for example, is an attractively watery re-write of the Beatles' "Hey Jude," while the opening "Bad Scene" is (unsurprisingly) a cautionary piece of acid rock, heavy on the fuzz guitar and sound efffects…

British blues-rock quartet Ten Years After originally consisted of Alvin Lee (born December 19, 1944, died March 6, 2013), guitar and vocals; Chick Churchill (born January 2, 1949), keyboards; Leo Lyons (born November 30, 1944) bass; and Ric Lee (born October 20, 1945), drums. The group was formed in 1967 and signed to Decca in England. Their first album was not a success, but their second, the live Undead (1968) containing "I'm Going Home," a six-minute blues workout by the fleet-fingered Alvin, hit the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Stonedhenge (1969) hit the U.K. Top Ten in early 1969. Ten Years After's U.S. breakthrough came as a result of their appearance at Woodstock, at which they played a nine-minute version of "I'm Going Home." Their next album, Ssssh, reached the U.S. Top 20, and Cricklewood Green, containing the hit single "Love Like a Man," reached number four. Watt completed the group's Decca contract, after which they signed with Columbia and moved in a more mainstream pop direction, typified by the gold-selling 1971 album A Space in Time and its Top 40 single, "I'd Love to Change the World."

EARLY 1969 US BROADCAST SHOW, RECORDED FIVE MONTHS BEFORE TYA’s BREAKTHROUGH WOODSTOCK PERFORMANCE • Formed from the ashes of early-1960s Nottingham collective, The Jaybirds, Ten Years After became an entity in their own right around 1966, when they moved to London and changed their name. • Ten Years After were soon gigging steadily, including holding down a residency at London's Marquee Club, and in 1967, after an appearance at the Windsor Jazz Festival earned praise in the music press, the quartet signed a record deal with Deram Records, the progressive subsidiary of the U.K. Decca label. • Divided between originals by Alvin Lee and covers of blues classics, Ten Years After's self-titled debut (released in 1967) didn't capture the group's on-stage fire, so for their second LP, 1968's Undead, they documented a show at a small club where TYA could stretch out on blues jams, and the group unveiled a raucous new number, ‘I'm Going Home.’ The tune caught the notice of blues fans, and the album charted in the United States, going to 115 on the Top 200 charts.
