Convinced of the benefits of holistic health practices (mostly involving irrigation of the bowels and colon), Kellogg opens a spa in Battle Creek, Michigan that immediately attracts the well-to-do of his time, including Will (Matthew Broderick) and Eleanor Lightbody (Bridget Fonda).

After a catatonic episode on a railway station platform, Jacob Horner (Stacy Keach) is taken to "The Farm", a bizarre insane asylum run by Doctor D (James Earl Jones). After being "cured", Jacob takes a job as an English lecturer at a nearby college and begins a disastrous affair with the wife of a colleague.
