The Choir of The Queen's College Oxford That Sweet City

The world-premiere recording of choral and instrumental music by the long-neglected Christopher Gibbons, second son of the famous Orlando. Featuring the Choir of the AAM (who make their recording debut), this disc surveys the broad expressive palette of a composer who provides the "missing link between the pre-Commonwealth world of William Lawes and the Restoration baroquerie of Henry Purcell".

Manuel Cardoso (1566–1650) was one of the most important composers of the golden age of Portuguese polyphony around the turn of the seventeenth century. But history has not been kind to him: the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that ruined the Convento do Carmo, where he spent most of his working life, also resulted in the loss of the only attested image of the composer and a good deal of his music – and much of that which survived has been neglected, his Masses included.

In an age when church attendance in England was flourishing, Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810–1876) was one of the foremost composers and organists of his day. Taking advantage of new developments in instrument building, Wesley was able to push the boundaries of English church music in a new direction, encompassing a more ambitious, even operatic style. In this recording – the first to have been made using an organ similar in design to his own – Wesley’s music is brought to vibrant life by the young professional singers of Holy Sepulchre under conductor Toby Ward.

With everything the Temptations released pretty much guaranteed to turn to gold, not to mention platinum, even their tripped-out forays into sweet '60s psychedelic experimentation were sure to fire a string of hits. 1970's Norman Whitfield-produced Psychedelic Shack while perhaps a system shock to those fans who grooved to the band's lame-suited, Motown dance-routined R&B classics was a magnificent stretch into an epic that ultimately emerged as another in a long line of enduring sets.
