Ever since their first release in 2011, there’s been a great deepness and complex mystery to Golden Fable’s music. Stirring up feelings of exhilaration and sadness while immersing you in a bath of sonic stimulation. It’s the sort of soundtrack you’d want to call upon while gazing upon an open horizon “captive to your thoughts” proclaim the lyrics on song ‘Hold True’, or intentionally getting lost in an ancient wood as seen in the music video for recent single ‘Finery’ which premiered on Folk Radio. This music has a primal timeless existence, classically beautiful but with a contemporary production, new album Alchemy is brilliantly fresh.

Joe Santa Maria, a fiery alto saxophonist with a strong command of post-bop vernacular, took a detour from earlier acoustic jazz releases The Illustrated Man (2012) and Introspection (2014) when he made Creature (2016), an absorbing, otherworldly set of electronic tracks and experimental woodwind sounds and improvisations. His new release, Echo Deep, has a foot in both these worlds, in a sense: a sonically exploratory solo voyage, though one involving other players in a plethora of roles.

While Aarset and Bang have worked together in many projects, particularly on Aarset's "Dream Logic" (ECM 2012), "Snow Catches on her Eyelashes" is a different kind of creation. Where "Dream Logic" was distinctly an "Eivind Aarset" album, albeit one where Aarset explored new territory with his guitar and playing, this new album is clearly the work of a duo.Immediately noticeable is the lack of obviously "guitar" sounds.
