Bassist and Oregon cofounder Glen Moore joins pianist Larry Karush (who can be found lurking elsewhere on ECM as part of Steve Reich’s ensembles) in a fascinating encounter recorded on the titular date for the JAPO label. Perhaps because the two had already nurtured a deep synergy, what might have been a straight-up duo project instead turned into a spacious and variegated statement. Karush serves up four memorable solo portions, including opener “Untitled.” Balancing cloudy textures with sudden intakes of breath, it leaves only ash to tell of the fire that once burned there.

“Vibes Of Truth” is a masterpiece that covers all the bases: from soul through funk to jazz. It’s been sought-after by collectors for the three club friendly tunes within its grooves: ‘Backed Up Against The Wall’, ‘Concrete Jungle’ and ‘I Need You Girl’. The album was brought to Fantasy by Donald Byrd then enjoying great success with his productions for the Blackbyrds, who he met when they were students on a course he taught at Howard University, and his own jazz fusion albums on Blue Note. Lincoln Ross, the multi-instrumentalist leader of the 3 Pieces was also a former student of Byrd’s. Although the 3 Pieces failed to repeat the success of the Blackbyrds, they created an amazing album.

Shiva Jones was the iconic vocalist with supergroup Quintessence during their mercurial 1969-72 reign. Although periodically active in new musical ventures in both Australia and the US during subsequent decades, he made no commercially released recordings and had left the Quintessence repertoire frozen in time. Then, 35 years later, Shiva recruited some of his favourite musicians, including original Quintessence guitarist Maha Dev and Swiss keyboard wizard Rudra Beauvert, to collaborate on a series of remarkably fresh studio recordings featuring old Quintessence favourites along with some wholly new material. Here, remastered from the original mixes, and with a track listing personally selected by Shiva, is the very best of these recordings. The accompanying booklet includes liner notes by Shiva Jones and Rudra Beauvert.
