After the fairly straightforward West Coast folk rock of Tim Buckley and Goodbye and Hello, 1969’s Happy Sad finds the young singer-songwriter transitioning to a more experimental sound. Featuring killer guitar work from Lee Underwood, stellar vibraphone from David Friedman and a much stronger jazz bent, the record marks the beginning of Buckley’s exploration of atmosphere, mood, and octave bending vocal gymnastics, elements that would take an even more avant garde turn on subsequent albums. After 40 years, how does Happy Sad stand up? Only a song-by-song analysis will reveal the answer..

He'd begun this trilogy with Greetings From LA in 1972. He followed Greetings with Sefronia and the last album in his deal with DiscReet, the label owned by his manager, Herb Cohen, was this - Look At The Fool. The album has been remastered from the original tapes by Dave Schultz in 2017, and the booklet features the lyrics and new annotation.

Tim Buckley possessed a golden voice that spanned the range from baritone to tenor. More importantly, he knew what to do with it. Sometimes he used it simply as a vehicle to carry the lyrics. Other times he used it as an extraordinary musical instrument in its own right.

Of the 13 previously unreleased solo acoustic songs contained here, six of them did eventually appear with more expansive instrumentation on Goodbye & Hello (along with another four not included here). However, the crown jewel of this package is seven never-before-heard compositions. These will be new to even the most devoted Buckley fan. Arguably, two of them crept out decades after Tim's death (albeit, much different recordings than what you have here) but with little fanfare.
