Time of The Wolf

April 1945: Gregor Hecker, 19 years of age, reaches the outskirts of Berlin as part of the Red Army's scouting team. Having fled Germany with his family when he was eight, he is confronted with the dilemma of having to fight men from the very country he was born in. Through dealing with challenging situations (e.g. he is appointed commander of Bernau, talks to many disillusioned Germans, and is once and again attacked by scattered groups of German soldiers), he grows more confident that not all hope is lost for post-war Germany. Based on the diary entries of director Konrad Wolf, the episodic movie authentically portrays the protagonist's struggle to come to terms with his own past and identity.

Hunger is a sparkling black-and-white film written and directed by Denmark's Henning Carlsen ("The Wolf at the Door") that's based on the acclaimed first novel by Knut Hamsun. It's an uncompromising story about a starving, foolish and proud young writer named Pontus (Per Oscarsson) living in Christiana, Norway, in 1890. The depressing grey atmospheric locations reflect the squalor and coldness of the people the struggling artist had to face. Oscarsson, for his marvelously effective heartbreaking and complex performance, won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Phelps Department Store is about to be sold by its new part owner, Tommy Rogers with the permission of Martha Phelps, the dowager co-owner. The current manager doesn't want this as the irregularities in the books will show up. When an attempt is made on Tommy's life, Martha enlists the worst private eye in the world to protect him, Wolf J. Flywheel.
