EXCHANGE is the seventh album by Cholet Känzig Papaux Trio. It once again illustrates the obvious cohesion of this trio in which striking melodic verve, harmonic hypersensitivity and astonishing rhythmic work balance each other out.

Trio Isimsiz (Turkish for ‘no name’) have certainly been making themselves a name as one of the most exciting young piano trios on the classical music scene. All three members of the Trio Isimsiz enjoy great success individually. Erdem Misirlioglu was a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition in 2008, Pablo Hernán Benedí is a member of the Chiaroscuro Quartet, formed by Alina Ibragimova, and Michael Petrov represented the UK in the European Concert Halls Organisation Rising Star series. This is the Trio’s debut recording.

For this recording of music by Buxtehude, Jonathan Cohen, founder of the ensemble Arcangelo, is joined by a distinguished trio, including two regulars on the Alpha label, Sophie Gent and Thomas Dunford, alongside the gambist Jonathan Manson. Although Dietrich Buxtehude is famous above all for his organ music and cantatas, and for the long journey the young Bach undertook to meet him, his chamber music is virtually unknown. In the mid-1690s, at the height of his fame, Buxtehude published two collections in rapid succession, each comprising seven sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and basso continuo.

Following the trios led by Stefano Bollani and Giovanni Guidi, Roma Trio is another splendid piano trio from Italy that debuted on Venus Records. The youngish trio consists of pianist Luca Mannutza, bassist Gianluca Renzi and drummer Nicola Angelucci. They are all up-and-coming artists who have played with Paolo Fresu, Steve Grossman, Fabrizio Bosso, Marc Johnson and Giovanni Mirabassi. The Italian jazz scene is really hot right now, and this trio is one of the top groups in the country.

It is the works of the first collection (1694) – designated Opus 1 in the print – that Arcangelo has recorded here. These sonatas are characterised by pronounced experimental features in both the scoring and the handling of the instruments.

This Haitink/Beaux Arts/LPO Triple Concerto is superb and also unique in my experience. The acoustic captures the BA Trio so closely that one can hear their playing in minute detail. At the same time, the orchestral playing is equally detailed and attractively unbloated. The BA plays the concerto from a chamber music perspective more than a triple superstar perspective. Nothing drags and the bouyancy helps. Pressler and Greenhouse are especially eloquent. Both play with beautiful tone.
