How patient have they been? It's hard to believe it's been five years since Wire released the first two Read & Burn EPs, which were partially compiled in 2003 on the Send album in the U.S. Those EPs mostly ignored the innovative but sometimes unsatisfying electronic music Wire had made during its first reunion, from 1986 to 1991, returning instead to the bracing immediacy and brevity of their earliest music, but with a decidedly modern sound. Read & Burn 03 is something quite different altogether for Wire, a 25-minute EP with four songs that don't seem much like anything they've ever done.

For all its intellect and adrenaline, metal is not generally known for being music’s most emotionally moving genre. While many prog fans would certainly point to Anathema and Pain of Salvation as prime examples of bands who know how to balance the rapturous with the raucous, those with even a passing familiarity with their output would note that these two European ensembles do so while straying fairly far from their metal roots. Many metal devotees would, however, surely point to two unapologetically metal bands who reliably inspire both manic headbanging and cathartic weeping – Fates Warning and Redemption – and it doesn’t take a metal scholar to note that these two American bands have a very important trait in common.

This is a double album set containing (as far as I can work out) all previously unreleased material (except for probably the Entity track). We start with two of the best pieces of music. First up is 'Omnicron' from The Omega Syndicate's Xan Alexander. Lovely bright tones hang in the air gorgeously fading into the distance, as if reaching out. They are answered by an echoing sequence which just gets better and better as it develops. A fantastic slow melody rises from it like a gentle mist from a waterfall. The pace starts to quicken with the introduction of another superb sequence and rhythm. The lead line gains extra bite as we go. This is wonderfully composed stuff- no meandering waffle. I am very much reminded of a cross between Chris Franke's 'London Concert' and 'Pacific Coast Highway' albums. Yes - it's that good!
