There is no need to wait for winter end to feel how lovely spring is. We always look for it as season heralding something fair and beautiful to come into our life. Indeed, this is the most extraordinary season invented by nature. How beautiful, charming, gentle, magnificent and flawless it is! So much imbued with solemn music, heady fragrance, exceptional warmth, flowers and vivid colors… Its coming never fails to awaken our best feelings so that, having surrendered to them, we could delight in love, joy and happiness to the full. Jane Maximova: "When you listen to a new piece of music it provokes either feeling of the past or that of the future. "Four Seasons - Russian Spring" is one of the few albums provoking feeling of the future, the very feeling we usually experience in springtime".

In the wake of the success of Jersey Boys, the theatrical production based on the Four Seasons' lives, Rhino issued this impressive three-CD, 76-track box set, which also includes a DVD of a dozen film clips from 1962-1975. It's never been hard to find a Four Seasons best-of that includes all their big hits (which are all here as well), but for those who want a bigger collection of the group's material, this fills the bill well. The usual intelligence Rhino brings to such large career retrospectives is in force here, the songs including numerous low-charting singles that usually don't make the cut for best-of anthologies; various LP-only tracks, and B-sides; Frankie Valli solo efforts; singles they released under the pseudonym of the Wonder Who?; and much more material from their post-1967 era than is found on most compilations. In fact, most of the really popular stuff is on disc one and the first half of disc two, though the box runs all the way through their comeback hits in the mid-'70s and a few stray releases from subsequent decades.

I have never been much of a classical music fan (on recorded music anyway) but hearing this Fone recording it actually makes sense for the 1st time! Listening to the SACD layer the music has striking 3-dimentional naturality but more importantly, PASSION! I have never felt that classical music had passion in a CD recording, & I always felt vinyl had too low SNR for classical music. The difference between the SACD & CD layer is quite obvious, & not subtle like on some discs. Listening to the CD layer (which is very good for a CD) results in a massive loss of coherence & passion – just the reason I never enjoyed classical on CD.

Itzhak Perlman: The Complete Warner Recordings embraces every aspect of Perlman's art. It contains concertos (the ‘essential' concertos, of course, but also more rarely-heard works, including Perlman's own commissions from living composers); other pieces for violin and orchestra; chamber music; recital and crossover repertoire (including jazz, ragtime and klezmer), and even a disc that focuses on Perlman as narrator and (briefly) opera singer. The recordings document his collaborations with the world's greatest orchestras and an array of superlative fellow-soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Lynn Harrell, Yo Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn and Pinchas Zukerman.

This is Vivaldi for the 21st century. At its heart, the album is a conversation between past and present, between classical composition and new discoveries, between composers over time spans. Danish composer Karl Aage Rasmussen (b. 1947) has always been keen on exploring our experience of time and movement. Building bridges between cultures and traditions, he here sheds new light on original compositions by Vivaldi and Respighi, written during his period as composer-in-residence for Danish National Baroque Orchestra Concerto Copenhagen. Karl Aage Rasmussen graduated from the Aarhus Academy of Music in 1971, where he was appointed Professor in Composition in 1988. Many of his works use pre-existing material woven into a dense musical montage. Words like ‘de-composing’ and ‘re-composing’ seem fit, and in later years, this interest has resulted in the arrangement and completion of music by Schumann and Schubert. Rasmussen was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1991 and the Wilhelm Hansen Composer Prize in 1997.
