Mixing '60s surf classics with contemporary retro efforts in the style isn't a great idea. It doesn't sink this surf compilation, though, because surf revivalists only occupy about a third of the disc; the rest include classics, or at least interesting obscurities, by the Bobby Fuller Four, the Lively Ones, Link Wray, the Centurions, the Sentinals, and others.

Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a pop and rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll (mainly Chuck Berry guitar style and the midtempo beat of artists like Buddy Holly), doo-wop, skiffle and R&B. The genre provided many of the bands responsible for the British Invasion of the American pop charts starting in 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music, including the format of the rock group around lead, rhythm and bass guitars with drums. A troupe where everyone acts as much as they sing, illuminated by a dream trial (Bourvil!) and the devilish gesture of Cluytens, set the standard for the Tales in 1948. Offenbach having died before having finished and ordered the score of his Tales of Hoffmann, it was Ernest Guiraud who was tasked with making it “viable”. In February 1881, the first spectators discovered a largely mutilated work: in addition to significant cuts in the prologue and the epilogue (which take place in a Nuremberg tavern), the entire last act – that of Giulietta, the Venetian courtesan, in whose home the poet has his reflection stolen – had been discarded. Only the Barcarolle survived, slipped between the acts of Olympia (the mechanical doll who ends up smashed) and Antonia (the young consumptive who dies from having sung). In 1907, the score published by Éditions Choudens transformed the spoken dialogues into recitatives (composed by Guiraud), inserted the air “Scintille diamant” (added by Gunsbourg) and restored Giulietta’s act, admittedly condensed and inserted between those of Olympia and Antonia. It is this version that Les Contes d’Hoffmann, recorded in March 1948, document. The disc preceded their revival at the Salle Favart, in a staging directed by Louis Musy and under the quicksilver baton of André Cluytens. The cast brings together a “troupe” welded together by the spirit of the theatre, the relief and colour of the word: everyone here plays as much as they sing.

Juin 1940. Les Allemands sont aux portes de Paris. Odile cède à la panique générale et s'embarque avec ses deux enfants sur les routes de l'exode. Au bout d'une cinquantaine de kilomètres, c'est l'horreur…Les Stukas allemands mitraillent et bombardent la colonne de réfugiés…Surgissant du fossé, un étrange garçon au crâne rasé, attifé comme un clown, les entraîne dans la campagne…Il se prénomme Yvan et il a 16 ans. Il trouve une grande maison abandonnée par ses propriétaires…Il grimpe le long d'une gouttiére et casse une lucarne…Il ne reste plus qu'à prendre possession du lieu…Qui est cet Yvan qui ment comme il restire et qui en même temps les protège? The friendship and trust that develops rapidly between a 17-year-old homeless boy and a young mother with two children is the basis for Andre Techine's STRAYED. They find each other during a terrifying WWII bombing as they are escaping Paris for the countryside. Yvan is a recluse hiding in the woods. Odile is a widow trying to get her children to safety. Together, the group finds a magical abandoned chateau hidden far back in the forest, and they take shelter there. Settling into a nearly idyllic secret existence as the rest of the world endures the hardships of war, their situation is fairly surreal. Yvan is resourceful and self-sufficient, instantly taking on the role of the man in the family. He hunts for rabbits, delights the children with his youthfulness and curiosity, and even ignites a romantic spark in Odile. But there is always a sense of urgency and doubt, as if the temporary paradise they've stumbled upon will come to a rapid halt and fall into the shadows of some looming dark event. A beautiful film that takes a carpe diem approach to survival–and loving life life–during wartime, STRAYED is rich with substance while also being a visually enjoyable and entertaining film from talented director Techine.
