Every so often, a piece of music comes along that defines a moment in popular culture history: Johann Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus did this in Vienna in the 1870s; Jerome Kern's Show Boat did it for Broadway musicals of the 1920s, and the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album served this purpose for the era of psychedelic music in the 1960s. Saturday Night Fever, although hardly as prodigious an artistic achievement as those precursors, was precisely that kind of musical phenomenon for the second half of the '70s. Ironically, before its release, the disco boom had seemingly run its course, primarily in Europe, and was confined mostly to black culture and the gay underground in America. Saturday Night Fever, as a movie and an album, plus a brace of hit singles off of it, suddenly made disco explode into mainstream, working- and middle-class America with a new immediacy and urgency, increasing its audience ten-fold overnight.

Long-established as a hugely popular radio format, the Classic Rock sound was established – though not codified and canonised until some while later – in the Seventies, when numerous British bands from a pop or blues-based background pioneered a muscular, riff-based sound that dominated American FM airwaves and led the most successful practitioners to fame, fortune and all manner of related excess.

In the late ‘70’s ‘disco’ became a phenomenon. Fueled by the success of the movie ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and the impact of the dance clubs, the music not only ruled the dance-floors but also the charts across the world. ‘The Best Disco Album’…. brings together the essential tracks from the era. Appropriately we kick off with the track ‘I Feel Love’ by Donna Summer, that not only came to represent the finest in disco but also pointed the way forward to the electronic and sequenced future of dance music. As well as ‘I Feel Love’, huge crowd pleasers from Earth Wind & Fire with The Emotions, The Jacksons, Lipps Inc. and Yvonne Elliman (from the afore-mentioned ‘Saturday Night Fever’ soundtrack) feature alongside truly timeless anthems from Gloria Gaynor, Village People, Dan Hartman and Thelma Houston as well as huge hits from Rose Royce, Odyssey and A Taste Of Honey. Established artists enjoyed some of their biggest success with disco tracks namely Diana Ross, Cher, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Three Degrees, Marvin Gaye, Edwin Starr and even the then new-wave stars Blondie – all of whom are featured. And it wasn’t just the U.S. acts! Some of the biggest disco songs were created in Europe (including Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’) and massive hits from Heatwave, Patrick Juvet, Baccara, Meco, Ottawan, Eruption and Boney M are included here. On top of that, the biggest European act of the decade are celebrated twice on this collection with ‘Voulez Vous’ and the phenomenal ‘Dancing Queen’… ABBA!

"Kim Carnes" is the 2nd studio album by Kim Carnes, released in 1975. After releasing her debut album "Rest on Me" through Amos Records in 1971, Carnes signed to A&M Records in early 1975. She described Kim Carnes as a "much more even" record than her debut, owing to her increased experience with writing and recording demos. "You're a Part of Me" was released as the lead single, having originally been recorded by Susan Jacks in 1974. Carnes' version reached #32 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in February 1976.

With Steve Cropper recording Mitch Ryder and Yvonne Elliman, the great Booker T. Jones and A&M exec David Anderle counter with a shimmering production for Rita Coolidge, emerging from her underground status with Mad Dogs & Englishmen to unleash her fifth Top 40 hit here: Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager's "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love." With an array of fine players, the Delta Lady weaves an album that is up there with Dusty in Memphis, though it never got the similar acclaim, with the stigma of adult contemporary pop not giving this wonderful effort the hip luster it deserves. A breathy and seductive cover of "One Fine Day" is another gem; it was being released by Jimmy and Kristy McNichol and Jane Oliver as well, with songwriter Carole King winning the race in 1980, going Top 15 with the 1963 Chiffons hit she composed.
