Seals & Crofts It's possible to hear the progression of soft rock through the music of Seals & Crofts, the duo who recorded some of the genre's perennials. Over the course of the 1970s, Seals & Crofts evolved from a gentle folk-rock duo to purveyors of slick, polished pop, two sounds that became inextricably associated with the Me Decade. Practitioners of the Baha'i Faith – at the height of their fame in the mid-'70s, they'd extol its virtues to fans – the duo were drawn to the quieter aspects of rock music, developing a signature sound distinguished by their easy melodicism and mellow vibe. Their craft was evident on their biggest hits. "Summer Breeze," "Diamond Girl," "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)," and "Get Closer" remained radio staples years after their initial run on the charts, surviving long after the pair called it a day at the dawn of the '80s.

Lounge singers have a lengthy history stretching back to the decades of the early twentieth century. The somewhat derisive term lounge lizard was coined then, and less well known lounge singers have often been ridiculed as dinosaurs of past eras and parodied for their smarmy delivery of standards. In any event, these lounge singers, perhaps performing in a hotel or cocktail bar, many deriving from the days of Tin Pan Alley. Many well-known performers got their start as lounge singers and musicians. Although he claims not to have worked for very long, worked as a lounge musician and penned the song Piano Man about his experience. Ultra lounge-style clubs sometimes create privacy around the seating areas with room dividers, sheets or curtains. Unlike most nightclubs, ultra lounges rarely have a separate dance floor.

Fans of Shana Cleveland's moody garage surf band La Luz might be thrown for a loop by her significantly more hushed and haunted solo work. If you listen closely to Cleveland's entire oeuvre, however, it becomes more apparent that she's been inspecting the same shadowy tones and floating feelings throughout her entire career, just at various degrees of amplitude depending on which form her music takes. Her third solo album, Manzanita, is some of her most low-key and slowly blooming material to date, fleshing out softly flickering folk tunes with understated orchestral arrangements.

Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey strutted across the stage with a thuggish menace, as bassist John Entwistle stood silent, functioning as the eye of the hurricane.

Throughout the 60s, New Zealand had always been three to six months behind overseas music and fashion. By 1970 we were virtually on a par with the overseas scene. There was now a wider musical gap as the rock became heavier and the pop became poppier. The teens that had grown up and lived through the sixties were now young adults and were generally looking for something else, there was a lot to pick from as Rock fused itself with everything from Country to Jazz. Meanwhile the next generation, that had grown up in the shadows of their older brothers and sisters hadn't finished with Pop music just yet while Mums and Dads were were still lapping up anything that could be sung along to.

You are alone in a hot tub on a warm summer night back in the '70s. Scarcely a week earlier she was right there with you, laughing, gazing at the stars, the FM radio playing the top pop hits as you frolicked in the gurgling water. Now she's gone. Really gone.

Crimson disbanded in '84 (one of several sad breakups) but re-formed a decade later as a 'double trio' consisting of Fripp, Belew, touch guitarist Trey Gunn, bassist/stick player Tony Levin, and drummers Bill Bruford and Pat Mastelotto. Then in 1997, it was time for another chapter of Crimson. The plan: To 'fractalize' into four 'research and development' units (as Fripp says). The Projekcts were born. Ironically, the first one deployed was Projekct Two, an outfit consisting of Fripp, Gunn, and Belew, who instead of playing guitar, handled Roland V drums (hardly a surprise, considering he was a drummer before he become a guitarist). 'The whole idea really was that the Projeckts would lead us to some basic building blocks that we would then turn into songs and formal pieces of music,' says Belew.
