Preisner's scoring for films have been very successful with "The Double Life Of Veronika", and three albums of scores for "Three Colours Blue, White and Red", some reaching Platinum CD status by Poland's musical standards… another outstanding score was "The Last September", based on a novel by Elizabeth Bowen and brought to the screen by director Hector Babenco, beautiful and compelling music, and the unforgettable Agnieszka Holland's "Secret Garden". Let us look at the soundtrack at hand–-"ABERDEEN", from writer/director Hans Petter Moland finds our characters on the road to Aberdeen in Scotland… storyline is between father and daughter regarding their reconciliation as the prepare to visit her dying mother… the big surprise is her father may not really be her father. Preisner captures the tone and mood of Moland's screenplay, with piano solo (Leszek Mozdzer) of a lingering theme, interwoven at times with the voice of Stina Nordenstam… create feelings of dreamlike drifting…mesmerizing counter-melodies featuring John Parricelli (guitar)… completely enters your body and soul.

One of the greatest figures of the 20th century, Bob Dylan helped shape the sound and form of popular music in the rock & roll era. Dylan emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s, earning a reputation as a perceptive, powerful songwriter, equally capable of penning a protest anthem or a romantic love song. His flair for impressionistic, stream-of-conscious lyrics marked a shift within folk music, an evolution Dylan also introduced to rock & roll when he picked up an electric guitar in 1965. Over the course of 18 months, he released Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, a trio of records that broadened the vocabulary of rock & roll, placing Dylan at the cutting edge of popular culture. Although he subsequently stepped away from the zeitgeist, his restless, occasionally messy work of the '70s and the '80s expanded his formidable songbook through a combination of classic albums (Blood on the Tracks) and intriguing detours (Empire Burlesque).

Booker White (his name was misspelled on the label for Shake 'Em on Down when it was issued on Vocalion in 1937, and it stuck) turned his vigorous guitar style, heavy voice, and considerable songwriting abilities into 20 classic blues tracks between 1930 and 1940. Then, following a last session for Vocalion in 1940 when he recorded the striking and passionate group of songs on which his reputation rests (including the ultimately revelatory "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues"), White effectively dropped off the public radar. Until 1963, that is, when graduate students and blues fans John Fahey and Ed Denson sent a letter addressed to "Bukka White, Old Blues Singer, c/o General Delivery, Aberdeen, MS," in an effort to locate the man who had recorded a 78 rpm called "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues" some 20 years earlier…

Until 1963, that is, when graduate students and blues fans John Fahey and Ed Denson sent a letter addressed to "Bukka White, Old Blues Singer, c/o General Delivery, Aberdeen, MS," in an effort to locate the man who had recorded a 78 rpm called "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues" some 20 years earlier. Amazingly, the letter actually reached White, who was still alive, although he had since moved from Mississippi to Memphis. The two budding blues scholars rushed to Memphis to meet him, recording the songs found on this collection one afternoon in the singer's room. These historic recordings. released as The Sonet Blues Story, reveal that White's robust guitar playing and his gruff, thundering voice had lost none of their vitality in the intervening years, and the bluesman delivers impassioned versions of some of his key tunes, including "Shake 'Em on Down," and the song that led to his rediscovery, "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues." White even takes a surprisingly nimble turn at the piano for "Drunk Man Blues." These sessions were originally released on Fahey's Takoma label, and although White went on to do other recording dates for small labels, he never sounded quite this intimate and impassioned again. The only minor complaint about this reissue is that the haunting version of "When Can I Change My Clothes" included here is mislabeled as "Parchman Farm Blues." Blues historian Samuel Charters eventually included these recordings in his Legacy of the Blues series, which in turn were released by a small Stockholm jazz and blues label founded in the '50s called Sonet Records. Listeners should start with White's stunning 1940 sides to get a real sense of this powerful musician, but these initial rediscovery tracks are only a notch or two less combustive, and are easily the best of White's later years. - Steve Leggett (AMG)

2007 compilation from the Scottish Alternative rockers led by the oddly-named (but enormously talented) Roddy Woomble. A complete career overview, from the Noise-Punk of their debut album Hope Is Important to the softer, Alt-Rock sound of Warnings/Promises, this album is a fine introduction to the band's sound. Includes the tracks 'When I Argue I See Shapes', 'Little Discourage' and 'American English'. A limited edition version of the album was released which included a DVD. The DVD featured a documentary on the band, a live concert recorded in Aberdeen during 2007's Make Another World tour, and all the band's promotional videos.
