This exciting set by percussionist Babatunde Lea ranges from Afro-Cuban jazz to interplay by the three horn players that is reminiscent of Charles Mingus' bands. There is no letup in the intensity and passion, even on slower numbers, and the use of repetition is inspired, never outlasting its welcome. Pianist Hilton Ruiz, trumpeter Kahlil Shaheed, and trombonist Angela Wellman all have their spots, but tenor saxophonist Richard Howell takes honors among the sidemen, not just for his solos but for his vocalizing on a few numbers, particularly "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and "Nature Boy." The stirring ensembles and heated rhythms make this a particularly memorable outing that is highly recommended.

It's compilations like this that make one wish she or he lived in some other country where Universal does business because the U.S. gets the last consideration when it comes to reissues. The Japanese and Europeans come first and second, then Brazil and Latin America, then the United States, and this Music Club issue of jazz versions of spy movie music and thriller TV themes is a prime example. Take a gander at the track list: from Basie doing the theme from M-Squad and Lalo Schifrin's original Dirty Harry theme to the James Taylor Quartet's acid jazz reading of the Starsky and Hutch theme, the strange, spacy reading of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" by the Alfred Hauser Orchestra, and Sammy Davis, Jr. wailing on "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow" for the Baretta TV show, this set is all killer, no filler and highly recommended…

For better or worse, Germany's Compost Records has been the benchmark and barometer for measuring the state of downtempo/chillout. While trends in downtempo music have altered and evolved since the inaugural installment of the Future Sounds of Jazz series, one thing has remained consistent: the series has provided quality compilations featuring some of electronic music's most respected downtempo producers alongside up-and-coming talent. This tenth installment, mixed carefully by label owner Michael Reinboth and labelmates Beanfield, features the same high-quality acid jazz, downtempo, and drum'n'bass that devotees of the label have come to expect from the series. Contributions from minimal techno maestro Ricardo Villalobos and jazz legend Cal Tjader (remixed ably by Reinboth)…

For the most part, these are indeed jazz versions of these tunes, but there are no extended improvisations or academic strategies employed to cool them off. If anything, the joy most of these performers take in interpreting this material loosens them up considerably.

Snowboy (aka Mark Cotgrove) is a UK-based Afro Cuban percussionist, bandleader, DJ, music critic, journalist and music promoter. Snowboy with his band The Latin Section create a sound which whilst encompassing the influences from the masters of the genre, is also highly capable of intense swing and verve. Snowboy and the Latin Section have developed a unique and often identifiable sound in Latin dance music, something that is apparently hard to do, especially in the Latin jazz arena. Percussively explosive uptempo original compositions, at times tinged with folklore that continues their quest to keep the music exciting and to keep the dancers dancing.

'The Masters Series: Jazz Funk Vol. 1' is a collection that strays beyond the beaten path and takes you to the dancefloor of the future age that would come to inspire many of the acid jazz generation. It includes songs like Idris Muhammad's 'Could Heaven Be Like This', which served as a direct inspiration to Jamiroquai's hit 'Alright'. But it doesn't shy away from vintage boogie-disco, either, with tracks like 'Spring High', composed by Stevie Wonder and performed by Ramsey Lewis or 'Doctor Jackyll And Mister Funk' by Jackie Mclean. Willie Bobo's rendition of 'Always There' is a definite floor-filler, while Herbie Hancock's much sought after Latin-disco classic 'Saturday Night' makes this a compilation you can't miss!
