Alan Rossi

De Genuaan Michelangelo Rossi (1601-1656) bracht het grootste gedeelte van zijn leven door in Rome. Hij schreef voornamelijk opera's. Maar ook wat instrumentale muziek en twee bundels Italiaanse madrigalen bleven bewaard. Paul van Nevel koos dertien polyfone madrigalen, een genre dat in de eerste helft van de 17de eeuw minder gangbaar werd; in die tijd waren de meeste madrigalen voor één of enkele stemmen geschreven.

Il Complesso Barocco recorded two CDs with madrigals by Rossi and Lotti in the late 90s. In the 16th century, madrigal originated in Rome as a worldly vocal work. The text was important and was used as a starting point for the music. This form quickly became popular in Venice and other important cities. Also in the 17th century many composers continued to compose madrigals, but these were more modern, with dissonants and bold harmonies. Rossi used mostly older texts and managed to set them to music with great precision. Lotti lived decades later and composed expressively, with a lot of chromaticism.

Status Quo are to release another batch of deluxe two and three CD releases via Universal Music. Under the spotlight this time are the '1+9+8+2' album released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the bands formation, 'Back To Back' from 1983, which features the last studio performances of original bass player Alan Lancaster before he left the band in late 1985, 'In The Army Now' (originally released in 1986) and its 1988 follow up, 'Ain't Complaining' which are all due for release by UMC/Mercury on Friday 28th September 2018.
