Very well done, in depth, reflection on the life of an absolute original. Great old footage of Frank, his music, family, band members, and the many wonderful Zappa media appearances. Highly recommend.

Even though musicians may come from divergent places, it is amazing to find that many have the same proclivities when it comes to musical tendencies and taste. The relationship between Detroit born baritone saxophonist and bass clarinetist Alex Harding and Romanian pianist Lucian Ban is one example, in this case two musician from such different places, coalesce around the power of the blues. Their new recording, Dark Blue, is a testament to their musical and brotherly bond.

As Alex Izenberg was piecing together the sweeping, psychedelic opuses on his full-band debut Alex Izenberg and The Exiles, the Los Angeles artist was focused on a simple goal: making something built to last. At the heart of his songs are bold ideas that take inspiration from the heady musings of philosopher Alan Watts, the multi-layered storytelling of King Crimson, and the imagistic vistas of Fleet Foxes. While the subject matter may feel esoteric—“My unconscious named the tongue/Of the lights of closed eyes” goes a characteristic lyric—Izenberg and his band let the music drift pleasantly to earth. The melodies are romantic and warm, and the arrangements are invitingly expansive, making expert use of a new ensemble formed around the strongest songs of his career.

Two discs of 1972-1977 BBC performances by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with excellent sound are collected on this set, though it's not quite as lengthy as you might assume, adding up to about an hour and a half in all (with only about half an hour on the second disc). There aren't great surprises in store for those familiar with Harvey's BBC work during this, his commercial peak. As was also true of his records, his reputation as a truly sensational live visual performer isn't quite mirrored by this audio-only document. Too, the only song that doesn't appear on his studio releases of this time is a 1972 cover of "Dance to the Music," which might be energetic but certainly wouldn't give Sly & the Family Stone cause to worry.

Alex North had his roots in the American stage but achieved his greatest fame in the epic film genre: his scores for Spartacus (1960), Cleopatra (1963) and The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) are beloved for their scope and grandeur. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) was to be another North epic but ended up with Stanley Kubrick's selections of classical music. Later in 1968 North was able to use some of his 2001 ideas in M-G-M's The Shoes of the Fisherman, a colossal modern-day tale about the first Russian Pope. The Shoes of the Fisherman was based on a novel by Morris L. West and starred Anthony Quinn as Kiril Lakota, a political prisoner who rejoins the Vatican after his release. When the Pope dies, Kiril emerges as an unlikely successor, and must set the course for the Vatican's role in a current world crisis. The film also starred Laurence Olivier as the Soviet Premier, David Janssen as an American journalist, and Oskar Werner as a Jesuit philosopher and friend of Kiril's.

Formed in the early part of 2014, “A” Blues Band was pieced together by renowned local piano man “Christopher” Rob Robinson. Rob recruited other Medina, NY musicians Mike Zelanzy (Guitar), Glenn Fuller (Harp), Nick Goodwin (Bass) and Alex Feig (Drums) to begin work on his passion project as he silently battled a cancer diagnosis. Rob had the blues in his blood and for the first time in his long-tenured musical career he had found himself as a frontman with full control of the musical direction. With a wealth of musical knowledge and history under his belt, Rob served as a musical mentor and teacher to the younger musicians (Nick & Alex) and as a platform for expression to his contemporaries (Mike & Glenn). What occurred over the coming years was a miraculous musical journey of cathartic healing, personal growth and burgeoning bonds of brotherhood. In the bands second year Rob received the blessed news that he was cancer-free and has since stayed in remission…and so the band plays on.
