A new saxophone competition held in honor of Michael Brecker has crowned its first champion. Los Angeles-based Alex Hahn won first prize in the inaugural Michael Brecker International Saxophone Competition, besting fellow top competitors Alex Weitz and Artem Badenko in a final round that took place at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat, Israel on Monday, August 26, 2019.

Jazz great Winston Mankunku has died in Cape Town. The masthead photo of ElectricJive (above) features Mankunku centre-stage on his soprano saxophone playing at the Langa Town Hall in 1972. It was taken by Ian Huntley, a long-time friend and supporter of this great musician.
