I love "Domino", Rahsaan Roland Kirk's great 1962 album. Recorded duriung his early period with Mercury Records, Rah extends his voice even further than his previous album "We Free Kings" and starts to exhibit more humor through his playing and interpretations of originals and standards. And the man cooks! His multi-reed playing is astonishing! Yet, what could be taken as showy or novel, is some of the most melodic, lyrical and swinging music around. And the company! Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill, Wynton Kelly, Roy Haynes, etcetera, is very fluid and challenging.

Actually, it is 11 discs if you count the surprise bonus CD. Additionally, Rahsaan: The Complete Mercury Recordings of Roland Kirk lives up to its name by augmenting those albums with more than two-dozen previously unissued sides.

The expanding musical universe of Rahsaan Roland Kirk continues its orbit on Domino. While always true to his exceptional talents, Kirk's previous efforts are somewhat derivative when compared to his later and more aggressive sound. On Domino, the genesis of his more assertive presence is thoroughly evident. Additionally, this disc features several impressive originals, as well as the most distinctly branded cover tunes to date, including the intense bop of the title track. As evidenced throughout the album, Kirk's compositions are becoming denser and more involved. "Meeting on Termini's Corner" - an ode to the legendary Five Spot club - mimics the off-kilter rhythms of Thelonious Monk. The tenor sax solo that rises through his multi-instrumentation is stunning…

It's hard to fathom today, but Roland Kirk was considered a gimmick for much of his early career. For sure, the man was a cagey character, which certainly didn't help his reputation. People were bemused by the way he played multiple horns simultaneously, including some horns that he invented himself. His style wasn't easy to pin down, either, so fluent was he in every jazz idiom.

The period Mercury Roland Kirk, well before he adopts binary rhythms and expand his music to cross the boundaries of jazz. At the beginning of the sixties, Kirk is already an orchestral man who, without renouncing blues and tradition, explores new ways, both melodic and instrumental. Using up to three instruments simultaneously, including stritch and manzello, both from the saxophone family, he chose to surround himself with two quartets, the presence of pianist Andrew Hill in the first conferring a grain of madness extra to his music. Wiser but full of feeling, Wynton Kelly's piano is nonetheless endearing, especially since it builds on Roy Haynes' formidable drumming and Roland Kirk's humor remains infectious.
