After suffering diminishing sales in the early '70s, Andy Williams finally missed the U.S. charts entirely with his 1975 album The Other Side of Me. (The LP did chart for a week in the U.K.) Of course, most of his peers in the ranks of middle-aged, middle-of-the-road pop singers weren't even recording for major labels anymore by then, but Williams had been defying gravity for so long it had seemed he would go on doing so forever. By the mid-'70s, however, his touring activities and a new syndicated TV show were occupying more of his attention, and he had less time to focus on recording, just as Columbia Records was less interested in promoting him.

"Born Free" is an album by American pop singer Andy Williams that was released on April 10, 1967, by Columbia Records and includes half a dozen songs associated with movies or musicals. Two of these tracks, however, originated in the scores of the films indicated on the album jacket but had lyrics added later: the melody for "Strangers in the Night" was written for A Man Could Get Killed, and "Somewhere My Love" began as "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago.

In its matching up of Andy Williams titles for a two-fer release, Collectables Records has opted to combine Williams' spring 1972 album Love Theme From "The Godfather" with his spring 1974 album The Way We Were, skipping over his fall 1972 album Alone Again (Naturally) and his fall 1973 album Solitaire. (Those two are together on another disc.) The theory may have been that these two both had something to do with the movies while the two in between did not, but in fact all of these albums take the same approach, more or less. That approach is to have Williams present his interpretations of songs from the pop charts of the period. As it happens, these two albums mark significant milestones for the singer, albeit of opposite sorts.

Andy Williams An engaging crooner, TV personality, and entrepreneur, Andy Williams was one of the most bankable and popular singers of his era. With his laid-back delivery, supple voice, and amiable charm, Williams rode a wave of success that took him from a childhood vocal act with his brothers to worldwide fame as a solo artist, eventually finding latter-day success as a theater impresario in Branson, Missouri. He started out as a crooner in the post-Frank Sinatra style, and scored his most recognizable hit with his version of Henry Mancini's Breakfast at Tiffany's theme "Moon River" off 1962's Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes. However, his wide-ranging taste in music (as evidenced by the guests on his '60s variety show) found him embracing artists and songs across generational and stylistic boundaries; and he can be heard on record interpreting songs that range from traditional pop to rock to bossa nova, country, and more. From the pre-rock & roll era onward, Williams was one of the most recognizable singers of his day.

Perhaps the most innovative album Andy Williams has recorded in the past 10 years. Andy really steps out of the box on this one and give some very contempoary stylings to some old classics. Yes, this is very different for Andy Williams, but with sales topping 800,000 copies this release was Andy's 23rd Gold or platinum record. It is wonderful to have Andy Williams back in the studio once again.

Crooner star of the 60s and 70s, the singer with a suave voice was notably the performer of the tube Moon River, the presenter of his own TV show that blew up the audience between 1962 and 1971 and the owner of 18 gold and three platinum records ! He will remain as one of the major voices of the easy listening of this period, expert in deliciously kitschy cooing. Without Andy Williams, No Austin Powers.

In the spring of 1969, Andy Williams scored his biggest pop hit in four and a half years with the German import "Happy Heart," getting well into the Top 40. (The single probably would have done even better if there hadn't been a competing version by Petula Clark.) This was reason enough to slap together an album of the same name, filled out with the singer's interpretations of current pop hits. But the Happy Heart LP didn't really differ much in its approach from Williams' previous album, Honey, which also contained nearly all pop covers. The only real difference was that this time Williams was not waiting so long.
